Today, on Jan. 15, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would have celebrated his 96th birthday. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first observed as a federal holiday in 1986, 18 years after his assassination, but it wasn’t observed in all 50 states until 2000. “But we must see that the struggle today is much more difficult. It’s more difficult today because we are struggling now for genuine equality. And it’s much easier to integrate a lunch counter than it is to guarantee a livable income and a good solid job. It’s much easier to guarantee the right to vote than it is to guarantee the right to live in sanitary, decent housing conditions. It is much easier to integrate a public park than it is to make genuine, quality, integrated education a reality. And so today we are struggling for something which says we demand genuine equality.” - Dr. King, 1967 #MLK #MLKDay #MLKJrDay

Many of our offices will be closed today, Jan. 20, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The holiday was first observed on Jan. 20, 1986, and has since been celebrated to honor Dr. King’s impact fighting for racial equality. Dr. King was the youngest person to ever receive the Nobel Peace Prize, earning it back in 1964. Four years later, he was assassinated in Memphis, TN at the age of 39. Today, we remember his leadership during the civil rights movement and his inspiring messages of community, equality, and unity.
