States Newsroom stands with everyone who has been affected by the Los Angeles County fires. Our hearts go out to those who have lost their homes or loved ones, to the firefighters putting their lives on the line to protect these communities and to all the journalists in California covering this devastating event. Our partners at CalMatters have been on the ground and put together this collection of photos. We wish them safety and strength. https://lnkd.in/ePcRtY9w

🎉 Congratulations to the Minnesota Reformer, marking five years of reporting on Minnesota's legislature, politics and policy. 👏 When the Reformer launched Jan. 14, 2020, Editor-in-Chief j. patrick coolican introduced the reporting team’s mission: “We’re interested in telling great stories, without fear or favor. The state’s most powerful people and institutions should be ready for our scrutiny and hard questions. We’ll work hard to bring you analysis, investigations and storytelling, so you’ll know not only what happened, but why it happened, who is responsible and what it means for Minnesota’s present and future.” Since 2020, the Reformer has done just that, filling a growing void in the media ecosystem, where local newsrooms have dwindled under financial pressures and “news deserts” have become the norm in rural areas. This is how States Newsroom is working to rebuild the media ecosystem. The Reformer's five-year anniversary falls fittingly on the first day of the Minnesota legislative session. The five-person staff of the Minnesota Reformer, including Coolican, Max Nesterak, Christopher Ingraham, Michelle Griffith and Madison McVan, will mark the anniversary by doing what they do every day: reporting the news in Minnesota. #LocalJournalism 💪 #FairFearlessFree https://lnkd.in/e8ibk9Sv

🎉 Congratulations to the Iowa Capital Dispatch, marking five years of reporting on Iowa's legislature, politics and policy. When the Capital Dispatch newsroom, the 10th for States Newsroom, launched on Jan. 7, 2020, the state of local journalism was deeply in flux. It still is. But with more journalists resourced to cover the state house, other local news outlets now can reallocate their reporters to other beats. As Anelia K. Dimitrova, who recently stepped away from helming Waverly Newspapers after a 23-year stint as the executive editor, said: “They keep focus on the issues at the state level and on important developments that smaller community news organizations do not have the capacity to cover. The fact that the content is free for readers, and to news organizations interested in carrying it, is a great testament to their commitment to sharing their quality journalism, which ultimately benefits all.” This is how States Newsroom is working to rebuild the media ecosystem. 👏 We're proud to have Kathie Obradovich, Clark Kauffman, Robin Opsahl, Cami Koons and Brooklyn Draisey reporting for the people of Iowa. #LocalJournalism 💪 #FairFearlessFree https://lnkd.in/dv_UdRSx

Is a state's de-fanged ethics commission better than no ethics commission at all? Consider North Dakota. The North Dakota Monitor in partnership with ProPublica's Local Reporting Network explores what happened after some fed-up North Dakotans, led by a group of women calling themselves the BadAss Grandmas, voted to amend the constitution and establish a state Ethics Commission six years ago. Their goal was to investigate and stop unethical conduct by public officials. But the watchdog agency has achieved less than the advocates had hoped, undermined in large part by the Legislature the commission is charged with overseeing. The commission has not substantiated any of the 81 complaints it has received. It has dismissed 47, most because it lacked the authority to investigate them. Thirty complaints are pending, some for more than a year. Numerous tips don’t get investigated because the agency can’t proceed without a formal complaint, and complainants have said they fear retaliation if they file one, the commission’s executive director said. #LocalJournalism #FairFearlessFree Read this important investigation:
