Supporting Females in the world of Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics

About us

We are passionate about creating a more inclusive and equitable working world for females in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. We are a source of support and information for Individuals who identify as Female working in STEM. Women have been underrepresented in STEM for many years, both in university and in industry. Our mission is to create a more equitable working world, share interest and knowledge to support growth for Females across these industries. According to a recent report compiled by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), there are now over one million women in STEM occupations, but they still only account for 29% of the overall UK STEM workforce. While progress has undeniably been made, it’s evident that the UK needs to still actively encourage more women into the industry. We are here to help change that through sharing support and knowledge across these industries and bringing people together. Are you with us?

In an industry where the odds are stacked against us, WOMEN IN TECH are rewriting the rules—and winning! 🔝 It's WOMEN IN TECH WEEK a critical time to celebrate the achievements, resilience, and progress of women breaking boundaries in male-dominated spaces. Having led a £400m+ technical managed service contract at #BT, delivered infrastructure, IVR transformation and 24/7 operations for #Barclays, and navigated complex IT re-platforming transformations for #Lloyds Insurance and Investments, I’ve faced the unique challenges women encounter in high-stakes environments. Whether it's being the only woman in the room or navigating unconscious biases, the path is rarely easy. But with each barrier we break, we open doors for the women who follow.  👠 The journey has tested me in ways I couldn’t have anticipated—managing teams of c500 people across multiple countries, driving change in industries where representation is still limited, and continually proving that women not only deserve a seat at the table but excel when they get there. So, this Women in Tech Week, let’s honour the trailblazers, the ones pushing boundaries every day, and those still navigating the challenges of this rewarding yet demanding industry. Together, we are reshaping tech to be a more inclusive and innovative space. How are you celebrating the achievements of your WOMEN IN TECH this week? I'd love to hear about it............. Also, if you are a WOMAN IN TECH, please feel free to share your unique experience and stories of challenge, adversity and reward below...... ⬇️ #WomenInTech #BreakingBarriers #InclusiveLeadership #TechForAll #WomenEmpowerment #LeadershipInAction

With the generous funding of our partners, we run STEM Camps throughout the year. These are crucial for improving young people’s understanding of and interest in STEM subjects. Our camps help students achieve 1 grade higher in STEM topics. They also enable STEM Ambassadors to build lasting and sustained relationships with schools and communities. This significantly increases students’ aspirations. One student even said that ‘the past week has made me even more determined to choose a career in STEM. #girlsinstem’ 👩 If you’re an organisation interested in furthering the future generation of STEM professionals, help support us today, get in touch directly through Liz Whitworth at l.whitworth@stem.org.uk.

  • Overall popularity of STEM subjects on the rise! Entries across all STEM subjects have increased by 6.7% from last year, with STEM popularity hiking for both male (+8.2%) and female students (+5%). Mathematics remains the most popular STEM (and non-STEM) subject, accounting for 12.1% of all entries (up by 10.9% in 2023), now exceeding 100,000 in entries for the first time. Further mathematics (+19.9%) and physics (+12.3%) have seen the greatest increase in popularity, with physics now in the top ten most popular A level subjects.  Computing also saw increased entries (+11.4%), with female entries in computing representing the greatest jump in popularity across all subjects, with entries surging by 28.6%. • Gina Buckney is back in Liverpool putting the Femme into STEM Her latest program of work with Your People Power focuses on encouraging women and girls in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Her work with the United Nations Women has taught her people need more Role models who look like us. She may not look like the stereotypical Techie/Engineer, but this is her, Gina, from Merseyside. During her 20 years in engineering and tech she noticed women tend to dress down to fit in with their male counterparts, but if you know Gina you know dressing down is not my thing, unless she's telling someone off by giving them a dressing down 😂 ================================ Some stats: The latest research from the IET shows that the most prevalent reason as to why there is such a disparity in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) is that women are not encouraged to think about STEM careers in school (45%) and women get put off by how male-dominated the industry is (32%). Over one million UK women are now in STEM occupations but still account for only 29% of the STEM workforce. Having more visible female role models for girls in STEM would help to close the gender gap. ================================= A personal story from Gina Buckney: At 26 I became a Senior Ops Manager, responsible for 144 engineers in South Liverpool and 6 Operations Managers at BT Group, Openreach. I’d come from the world of corporate infrastructure banking, Barclays, dressed in my Navy Blue suit, and in heels, of course, I walked into my first board meeting. The response from my direct reports was not what I expected, because I certainly wasn’t what they were expecting. Half their age, female, mixed-race. I probably ticked all the diversity boxes back then (but, we are talking over 15 years ago when diversity wasn't really a thing). So, as I proceeded to run the meeting with my much older, more experienced, all-white male team, I received some harsh criticism. Comments of, ‘Are you even a real SOM?’, ‘What can you teach us?!’, ‘You can’t come in here and put things in your little project manager box!’ Turns out, my South Liverpool division concluded that year hitting target and stretch on every single KPI, and coming top out of all 20 divisions in the Northern region for Right First Time (our number 1 KPI), yup. Little young me, Gina from Liverpool, who had no prior experience in engineering or operations at the start of the role but was on a fantastic Leadership journey from BT led her team to success! How? Because, I was trained to become a master of people. We don’t need to know everything to start a job, but if we can understand and work with our people, we can achieve great things. #YourPeoplePower #STEMisFemme STEM is Femme
