We're excited to announce the first Building Equity Design Award recipient... The Memorial at Harvey Milk Plaza! 🏆 The Memorial at Harvey Milk Plaza is a renovation project that aims to revitalize the Harvey Milk Plaza at Castro Muni station in remembrance of Harvey Milk, an LGBTQIA+ rights activist and the first openly gay elected city official of San Francisco California. The LGBTQIA+ community was pivotal in developing the design concept to ensure the final project would be a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQIA+ identifying individuals globally. 🏳️🌈 Milk’s legacy is woven throughout the project by inscribing his teachings of “hope” and “action” directly onto two pedestals that anchor the site. The existing flagpole is preserved in its original location to represent the decades of LGBTQIA+ activism that occurred at the site, including the vigil following Milk’s assassination. The site also features a tower-like structure known as “the beacon” to serve as a prominent landmark for the project while digitally displaying messages and images relevant to the LGBTQIA+ community. Thank you to SWA Group, Brian Springfield, and the incredible team at The Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza for their work and dedication to advancing equity in the built environment. We feel incredibly honored to be part of projects like The Ethel - a 100% permanent supportive housing development for DC residents exiting homelessness. The project team prioritized both energy efficiency and occupant wellbeing to create a sustainable and healthy community! Some notable features include: 〰️ All-electric heating, cooling, and cooking 〰️ High-efficiency, multi-stage heat pumps in every unit 〰️ No combustion in the building 〰️ Fresh supply air that is MERV-13 filtered and delivered continuously 24/7 〰️ Well-sealed dwelling units that were blower-door tested (no air shared unit to unit) 〰️ Bath and kitchen exhaust fans tested to ensure humidity and pollutants are expelled to the outdoors Congratulations to the entire project team! 🙌
GTM|DC is proud to feature, The Ethel, a LEED Silver-certified multifamily project in the Hill East Waterfront, recently named a finalist in the CREW DC Awards! This project exemplifies the powerful impact of thoughtful design and community leadership, while demonstrating a commitment to lifting up the city’s most vulnerable residents, truly embodying this year's theme, “CREW Means Impact." Named in honor of Ethel Kennedy and situated next to the RFK Campus, the inspiring development provides 100 residential units, workforce training, and supportive services, empowering residents transitioning from homelessness. Nodding to the charm of early 1900 schoolhouses, The Ethel features red brick façades, a serene courtyard, and community-focused spaces like a training kitchen, boutique, salon, community garden, and tiered event plaza. GTM|DC Multifamily Leader, Rosana Torres, AIA, NCARB, reflects, "We are very proud to be a part of The Ethel. It’s a great example of the kind of architecture we love to do. Meaning, it’s a building we designed for real people to live and work in." We are thrilled to have been part of this transformative project and grateful to celebrate its impact within the community we love! Interested in learning about our Building Equity Standard pilot projects? We couldn't be more thrilled to be working with SWA Group and Kirksey Architecture who are truly committed to our mission of advancing equity in the built environment. Both teams are currently in pursuit of Building Equity Design and Experience Awards. 🏆 🏆 The Memorial at Harvey Milk Plaza, located in San Francisco, CA, is a renovation project of an existing transit stop. The project was spearheaded by the LGBTQIA+ Bay Area residents and The Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza to better honor Harvey Milk and to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community. Norman-Sims Elementary is a school modernization and consolidation effort aimed at bringing a quality 21st-century learning environment to the community of East Austin, TX, which has been historically under-resourced. Faculty, school administrators, and students were involved in the design process. The student body of Norman-Sims is comprised of predominantly low-income and BIPOC students. Norman-Sims was completed for first occupancy in January 2021. Check out the Building Equity Standard website for more information: https://lnkd.in/eJvKTFxJ Stay tuned for full details of each pilot project! #buildingequity #buildingequitystandard #equityinthebuiltenvironment *Images courtesy of the Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza/SWA Group and Kirksey Architecture

Happy Halloween! 🎃 Before you greet your ghouls and goblins, we have some questions for you: - Have you ever lived in an apartment building where you know *just a little too much* about your neighbors because of what you can hear through the walls? 🙉 - Lived near a train line and you reenact the train scene from My Cousin Vinny every day? 🚆 - Have you ever been in a virtual meeting where the conference room you're "talking to" sounds like a watery sea of voices? 🌊 If so, you've been a victim of poor acoustical planning. Many of us take good acoustics for granted. But it’s common for acoustic efforts to be the first thing cut from commercial projects—or not included in the design phase at all, according to Graham Waks, founder of Music City Acoustics. And when a space has bad acoustics, it can negatively impact the occupant experience. Listen to the latest episode of Buildings + Beyond to hear Graham and our in-house audio guru, Dylan Martello, talk about how room acoustics affect occupants of a space.
