Missouri's Siddens-Bening hands-free law went into effect in August 2023 and has reduced distracted driving in the state over the last year. CMT's Road Safety Board member Jennifer Smith will discuss the law at the 2024 Missouri Highway Safety and Traffic Conference, alongside the Missouri DOT’s Jon Nelson, AAA’s Angela Nelson, the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Scott White, and the Missourians for Responsible Transportation’s Taylor March. They’ll discuss the law’s impact on public awareness and dive into the data insights, interstate experiences, and its effects on vulnerable road users. After the devastating loss of their nine-year-old son, Logan, to a distracted driver, Brooke and Jordan Scherer transformed their tragedy into a force for change. They established "Living for Logan," a safe driving organization that helps save lives through distracted driving advocacy and awareness. Due to their persistence and fight to secure a criminal trial, case law was established for these types of crashes. This provides a foundational framework to find justice for people who have lost loved ones under similar circumstances.
