We are still absorbing all the interesting conversations and what we learned at #KubeCon #CloudNativeCon last week in Salt Lake City. Above all, connecting with the cloud native community in person is what KubeCon is all about, and it’s what we enjoy the most. Here’s a quick recap of some of what our team most enjoyed discussing: ☕ Java rightsizing – So many people asked if continuous rightsizing can work for java workloads because in order to size a Java container correctly, you need to correctly size the Java heap first. ⚙️ OOM event response – We heard how manual resource adjustments to OOMs are simple in theory, but most people don’t have time to check back on memory usage to readjust settings once the workload isn’t OOM. 💵 Karpenter + workload autoscaling – There was a lot of excitement about how combining Karpenter for node autoscaling with workload rightsizing delivers a powerful one-two punch for cost optimization without sacrificing performance.
Take a Wizards's Journey through the technical inner workings of Kubernetes resource management. All 4 chapters of this deep dive into how Kubernetes requests and limits really work are now live on The New Stack, written by Reid Vandewiele. Yasmin COO at StormForge discusses the common pitfall of overprovisioning in Kubernetes clusters. She reveals how teams blindly set their HorizontalPodAutoscaler target utilization to 60% simply because it appears in the Kubernetes documentation, effectively wasting 40% of CPU resources. She outlines two optimization strategies: monitoring static applications through Grafana dashboards for accurate resource allocation and implementing automated scaling for dynamic workloads with varying resource needs throughout different time periods.
