Join ESRI Research Scientists Dr. Byoungchul Kwon and Dr. Vallabha Rao Rikka at the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference (AABC) in Las Vegas on December 10. Byoungchul will present at 1:45 p.m. PST on the topic, "Fire Suppression of Lithium-ion Battery Fires,” sharing insights on effective fire suppression methods for lithium-ion battery fires in electric vehicles, highlighting strategies, technologies, and challenges in ensuring safety and minimizing risks. The study was conducted in collaboration with Stress Engineering Services, Inc. Vallabha will speak on the topic, "Advanced Lithium-ion Battery Fast Charging: Enhancing Performance, Longevity, and Safety for Electric Vehicles" at 4:55 p.m. PST. He will discuss ESRI's research on an optimal fast-charging method that achieves full energy density in 15 minutes by mitigating lithium plating and transition metal dissolution at 100% state of charge. At this year’s Advanced Automotive Batteries Conference, don’t miss the presentation "Experimental Study of Fire Suppression and Hazard Characterization in Li-ion Battery Fires," by Dr. Byoungchul Kwon, a Research Scientist at the Electrochemical Safety Research Institute (ESRI). Dr. Kwon will focus on research that explores the effectiveness of water and aerosol-based suppressants in controlling lithium-ion battery fires. Using a test setup designed to mimic stationary grid energy storage applications, the study involved: • Single and multi-module tests in a 20-foot shipping container • Thermal runaway scenarios triggered by overcharging • In-depth measurements of temperature, heat flux, and emissions The findings deliver critical insights into fire suppression strategies and the potential hazards first responders face when managing large-scale Li-ion battery fires.
