Stronger Together Library Conference
Libraries
The 2024 Stronger Together Conference takes place at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel West Edmonton October 3 and 4.
About us
Today’s libraries are complex and diverse spaces. Providing a welcoming environment for all means managing a complicated range of challenges, while global issues, such as censorship and book banning, are felt right here at home. Libraries have historically been a safe space for divergent and controversial perspectives, however, none of today’s libraries is immune to vocal opinions and opposing views. At the same time, new technologies and platforms are expanding opportunities for libraries to be at the forefront of change. There is tremendous excitement for innovations such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality. Providing access to leading-edge resources enables everyone in Alberta to experience advancements, and spark imaginations. It is within this context that we are proud to present the 2024 Stronger Together Conference, October 3 and 4, at the Edmonton DoubleTree by Hilton West Edmonton hotel. Join us as we welcome 500 attendees from all over central and northern Alberta. The event program will highlight current topics, such as advocacy, the business of libraries, innovative programming and more.

Our very own Adrian Cropley OAM, FRSA, IABC Fellow, SCMP, GCSCE recently delivered an insightful virtual presentation from Australia, engaging the audience in Edmonton, #Canada, at the Stronger Together Library Conference. He discussed the topic of artificial intelligence (AI). He began by exploring the origins of AI, highlighting how it has evolved from a concept in computer science to a powerful tool impacting multiple industries. A key focus of Adrian's presentation was the ethical and governance challenges surrounding AI. He emphasised the need for careful oversight to ensure AI systems are transparent, fair, and accountable. This included discussions on data privacy, bias in algorithms, and the importance of establishing ethical frameworks to guide AI development. Adrian also discussed the practical applications of AI in libraries and for librarians. His talk underscored AI’s potential to empower library professionals by automating routine tasks, thereby allowing them to focus more on complex, value-added services. The presentation sparked thoughtful dialogue on both the promises and challenges of integrating AI into library systems, leaving attendees with much to consider about the future of AI in their field. #Communication #AI #Ethics #Libraries

We were thrilled to see so many of our colleagues at the Alberta Stronger Together Conference last week! Thank you to the many smiling faces that stopped by our table to chat and learn a little about what the LAA is currently working on. If you didn't have a chance to stop by our table, we're happy to share that we are working on a new strategic direction! You can read more about that here: https://lnkd.in/gE45ShXg As part of our new strategic direction, we are conducting a research questionnaire and want you to fill it out, whether you are an LAA member or not. You can find the questionnaire here: https://lnkd.in/gQm7X3SH Responses will be accepted until November 1, 2024.

Focus Communications is proud to have supported the Stronger Together Library Conference, held on October 3-4 at the DoubleTree by Hilton West Edmonton. From the design of the brand, through the new website, registration, marketing, scripts, AV, sponsor engagement and materials our goal was to create a sustainable event that will bring people together for education, networking and discussion for years to come. It was amazing to be onsite with the attendees throughout the conference and ensure everything went smoothly. We worked with our frequent collaborators, Kiwi Productions Inc., who provided an exceptional AV experience. I had such a great time at the Stronger Together Library Conference! As an MLIS student, I was a bit nervous to attend my first library conference because I feared I might feel out of place. Of course, as a library worker I should’ve already known that libraries are full of welcoming people who want to help. This was no exception. I had a chance to meet many wonderful library people from all over the province, as well as to get together with other students from my program, which was awesome as an online student. This all really helped me understand the wide variety of experiences that we all come with, ultimately with the same goal: to be helpful and to open wide the doors of information. I will be processing the insightful panels I attended for a while, and I’m excited to carry this information into my studies and my work at the library. Speaking of which, having the support of Calgary Public Library to do this was incredible. I’m feeling very lucky and grateful!
