  • It’s the last week of NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH! This month we’ve been highlighting Native American Individuals who have made an impact in the world of science & technology. Nicole Aunapu Mann, a member of the Wailacki tribe, is a U.S. Marine Veteran and American astronaut. The first Native woman to go to space, Nicole was one of only eight applicants selected to become a NASA astronaut from a pool of more than 6,000 candidates. On her first spaceflight, she and her crew conducted about 250 experiments and two spacewalks totaling 14 hours. She was the Commander of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-5 mission to the International Space Station in October 2022, and also worked as an engineer, focusing on developing the Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System Rocket for Artemis, the program planning to send astronauts to the moon for the first time since 1972. In addition to her impressive career in the U.S. military and aerospace industry, Nicole is also a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots, the Tailhook Association, the US Naval Test Pilot School Alumni Association and the United States Naval Academy Alumni Association. She has received several awards, some of which include the Leroy Grumman award for “Best Paper, presented at the East Coast Society of Experimental Test Pilots Symposium, the Stephen D. Thorne Safety Award presented by NASA in 2015, and the Distinguished Aerospace Service Award presented by the Aerospace States Association in 2023. Not to mention, Nicole was also a 2019 inductee into the Academic All-American Hall of Fame.
