  • In honor of Black History Month, we remember Charles Richard Drew, MD, whose pioneering research in blood preservation revolutionized healthcare and led to the development of large-scale blood banks, which remain essential in modern medicine. During World War II, Dr. Drew directed the Blood for Britain project, which shipped vital plasma to England, providing lifesaving support during a time of global crisis. He also led the first American Red Cross Blood Bank and introduced mobile blood donation units, now known as bloodmobiles, making it easier to collect and distribute blood. Despite his significant contributions, he took a stand against racial injustice by protesting the American Red Cross' policy of segregating blood by race, ultimately resigning in protest. His remarkable achievements continue to inspire advancements in medicine and the ongoing fight for equality in healthcare. #blackhistorymonth #healthcare #history #healthequity

  • Join us in celebrating Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler who made history as the first Black woman in the U.S. to earn a medical degree in 1864. She dedicated her career to caring for underserved communities, particularly formerly enslaved people through the Freedmen's Bureau. In 1883, she authored Book of Medical Discourses, one of the first medical texts by an African American. Her groundbreaking work continues to inspire generations in healthcare and advocacy. #blackhistorymonth #healthcare #history #healthequity

  • This Black History Month, we reflect on the transformative achievements and contributions Black individuals have made to our healthcare system. Today, we celebrate the groundbreaking legacy of James McCune Smith, MD. In 1837, Dr. Smith became the first Black American to earn a medical degree. Facing racial barriers that barred him from U.S. medical schools, he attended the prestigious University of Glasgow Medical School in Scotland. Dr. Smith went on to establish the first pharmacy owned and operated by a Black person in the United States. His dedication to advancing medical knowledge also made him the first Black doctor to be published in U.S. medical journals. Beyond his medical achievements, Dr. Smith was a devoted abolitionist and intellectual, using his platform to fight for justice and equality. His groundbreaking contributions continue to inspire and shape the future of healthcare. #blackhistorymonth #healthcare #history #healthequity

  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. first spoke these words at a Chicago press conference held on March 25, 1966, in connection with the annual meeting of Medical Committee for Human Rights. His words remain a powerful reminder of the work still needed to ensure healthcare equity. At Surgery Partners, we are committed to embracing diversity and delivering equal care for all, regardless of race or background. Together, we honor his legacy by striving to create a more just and compassionate healthcare system. #MLKDay #SurgeryPartners #HealthcareEquality

  • Every holiday season, Surgery Partners facilities across the nation join hands in the mission to give back to their communities. This year, we are proud to spotlight BAHAMAS SURGERY CENTER LLC  and their heartfelt efforts to provide gifts to children in need. For the past 8 years, Bahamas Surgery Center has partnered with underprivileged schools in the Bakersfield City School District. By working closely with principals, they identify 35 deserving students each year who could benefit from a little extra holiday cheer. These children, spanning all elementary grade levels, share their wish lists – and the incredible team members at the surgery center make it their mission to fulfill those wishes. "The joy we get from watching the children open their gifts is special. Seeing their faces light up year after year makes me want to continue to do this," says Irma Cruz, Materials Manager at Bahamas Surgery Center. The wish lists often include essential items like jackets, warm clothes, bedding, and sometimes even larger necessities like bed frames and bikes. Thanks to the generosity of the surgery center's physicians and staff, every wish is met with care and compassion. Gifts are delivered the week before students head out for Christmas break, ensuring that their holiday season starts with smiles, warmth, and joy. "We do this because we see the need in our community. With family members who are educators, we understand how impactful these small gestures can be. This wouldn't be possible without the incredible support of our staff and physicians – thank you for helping us make a difference!" #SurgeryPartners #HolidayGiving #CommunitySupport #MakingADifference #SpreadingJoy
