  • 🚀 ICYMI: Exciting Progress in Neurosurgery! 🚀 Back in May of this year, Dr. Ruth Lau, a trailblazing neurosurgeon at Hospital Universitari Joan XXIII in Tarragona, Spain, was awarded a prestigious grant from SENEC | Sociedad Española de Neurocirugía. This grant will support her groundbreaking work on integrating AI into brain tumor surgery! 🎉 In collaboration with Dr. Andreu Gabarrós from Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge and researchers from Toronto Western Hospital and Kelowna General Hospital, Dr. Lau's innovative project aims to enhance surgical precision for primary brain tumors by using the SDSC platform to study neurosurgical video. 🤝 The incidence of these tumors ranges from 0.59 to 5.73 cases per 100,000 people, underscoring the urgent need for more effective approaches. Every day, surgeons treat patients with brain tumors, facing the challenge of removing as much tumor as possible without harming surrounding healthy tissue. AI can help us tackle these challenges in ways that haven’t been possible before, ultimately supplementing surgical techniques to enhance patient outcomes. 🏥 We cant wait to see what Dr. Ruth Lau discovers! 🌟 For a deeper dive into how this collaboration could transform patient care and surgical practices, check out the full article: https://lnkd.in/e2v95A-H

  • 🌟 About a month ago, our Director of Machine Learning Margaux Masson-Forsythe 🏳️🌈 captivated the TEDx #LoganCircle audience with her insights on the future of surgical training. Here are some key takeaways from her experience and ongoing work in AI and surgery: ✅Untapped Surgical Data: Hundreds of millions of surgical videos generate vast amounts of unused data, rich in insights that could revolutionize medical practices but often sit untouched. ✅AI has something Surgeons don’t (time): Unlike humans, AI can process and analyze hours of video in minutes, identifying patterns and providing valuable feedback to surgeons and medical residents. ✅Targeted Learning: Surgery often remains more art than science, leading to variability in patient outcomes. Just as athletes analyze their performances, medical practitioners can study specific techniques through AI-powered breakdowns of surgical actions, accelerating their skill development. ✅Predictive Analytics: Imagine an AI system that not only analyzes surgeries but predicts outcomes—potentially informing surgeons of the need for additional interventions before they even happen. The potential of AI in surgery is enormous. By collaborating among technologists, medical professionals, and policymakers, we can unlock a wealth of knowledge that leads to improved patient outcomes, reduced costs, and ultimately, lives saved. 🚀 Watch the full recording here: https://lnkd.in/ebi2Hk9G #AIinMedicine #TEDx #Innovation

  • 🌍Transforming Global Surgical Care! 🚑 Exciting things are happening after the World Health Assembly adopted universal access to emergency, critical, and operative care! The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences Global Clinical Care Alliance (GCCA) recently hosted an inaugural webinar to explore innovations in global surgical education, featuring our founder, Daniel Donoho, as a panelist to discuss innovations in global surgical education. It was a fantastic opportunity to discuss how we can all work together to make healthcare more accessible. Here’s what’s happening: 🌐 Over 1 Billion People Affected: Countless individuals suffer due to inadequate surgical care, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. A stark contrast exists between the U.S. and regions with limited neurosurgical resources. For example, Tanzania has a population of approximately 61 million, and the country has only 27 neurosurgeons—one for every 2.3 million people—and just 7 neurosurgical centers available. 📊 Harnessing Data for Better Outcomes: While these disparities exist, many neurosurgical operating rooms and procedures contain the same core equipment: cameras that capture raw data, instruments that record when they power cycle, and so on. By applying advanced technologies like computer vision and AI to this data, we can enhance surgical outcomes. 📚 Enhancing Surgical Training: By offering insights into the relationship between surgical steps and outcomes, we can identify patterns leading to successful procedures. The goal is to create a comprehensive database that identifies best practices, procedural variations, and factors influencing outcomes such as infections and procedure failures across all camera-based surgeries, both preoperatively and intraoperatively. This approach not only aims to provide long-term feedback, but also facilitates knowledge sharing across the world. Click here to view the entire discussion: https://lnkd.in/eCjzdQD2 Exciting prospects ahead as we leverage technology to elevate surgical care worldwide! 🌟 #GlobalHealth #Surgery #DataScience #AIinHealthcare #SurgicalTraining
