In Arizona and across the nation, school districts are facing the challenges of funding, grappling with the operating expenses such as paying teachers the salaries they deserve for the most noble of professions and the inevitable capital and infrastructure costs of school construction and maintenance. During a public meeting that went throughout the evening and into the next morning, I was pleased to be invited by Superintendent Dani Portillo to present Sustainability Partners and its unique funding programs to the Board of the Roosevelt School District. Under Dr. Portillo's leadership, a redesign of the district to resolve a financial deficit while creating better futures for all students is underway. The community has come together in focus groups, public meetings and community forums to hear and decide how to best invest resources to maximize student success and strengthen neighborhoods. As an alternative to costly debt financing, SP provides school districts as well as cities and towns, counties, and other public entities with innovative capital and infrastructure funding options. The SP team now looks forward to further exploring how it can aid Roosevelt leaders in fulfilling its goals by meeting the needs of District teachers and staff, South Phoenix taxpayers, and most importantly, the kids.
