Dr. Matt Edwards, Vice President of our Four Corners subregion, is the lead author of a new study in the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology exploring migration and state expansion at a Wari outpost in southern Peru (A.D. 650–1000). The research, co-authored with Professors Corina Kellner and Frank Ramos, uses isotopic analysis to uncover insights into migration patterns and cultural differences. The article based on Dr. Edwards’ dissertation fieldwork is available now on ScienceDirect and will appear in the journal’s March 2025 issue.

Regulatory alert: The U.S Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed listing the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) as a threatened species under the ESA with special rules for “take” exemptions. The USFWS has also proposed designating critical habitats for the western populations’ wintering grounds in southern California. We are here to help you develop and submit comments on the proposed rule and critical habitat designation for the monarch butterfly through evaluation and analysis, as well as reviewing the timeline of finalization as it relates to your project timelines. Reach out to Eleanor Gladding, Sharif Durzi, Kely Wabnitz, Amanda Glen, and Brittany Irle.

At SWCA, we know strong communities are built together. See how our teams rolled up their sleeves and joined #SWCAGivesBack events last month: 🩸 Denver – Ten employees braved the snow to donate blood, helping children in need at the Children's Hospital Colorado Foundation. 🚴♂️ Houston – A Houston team biked 180 miles in Bike Around the Bay, raising funds to protect Galveston Bay. 📦 Salt Lake City – Employees built move-out kits for The Road Home shelter to support individuals transitioning to new homes. 🍽 Pasadena – The volunteer group prepped Thanksgiving meals and gift baskets for Union Station’s Dinner in the Park event. 🎄 Chicago – The team decorated a donated tree with eco-friendly ornaments for the Brookfield Zoo.

#HistoricPreservation takes passion, and Erin Edwards has an abundance! Recently named the 2024 Sue Turner Preservationist of the Year by the Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation, Erin has been documenting the significant descendant communities of formerly enslaved persons along the Great River Road since 2020. Her work has uncovered the historical significance of an 11-mile stretch of the Westbank of St. John the Baptist Parish, now deemed eligible for National Historic Landmark status. Erin’s contributions are helping preserve Louisiana’s rich cultural heritage for generations to come. Congratulations, Erin!

As we gather together this holiday season, we have so much to be grateful for – a world-class team supporting our North Star, steadfast partners that drive us forward, and the opportunity to make a difference in the world around us. For our holiday card this year, we asked our clients and employees to choose where we will give back this holiday season. The results are in, and it was close! We are splitting the donation between the top two winning charities, World Wildlife Fund and National Alliance to End Homelessness. #SWCAGivesBack
