2024 has been a busy year. While offering a number of community education sessions the SWCCN has also reinvested in our key partnerships and secured funding for our foundational educational and Compassionate Connector programs. We are very excited about what 2025 will bring. Learn more by reading our December newsletter. https://lnkd.in/gtZ9B8BP #CompassionateCommunities

The South West Compassionate Communities Network is proud to be part of a consortium with Compassionate Communities Australia the Perron Institute, Milligan. and the City of Kalamunda to upscale the Compassionate Connector program. Lotterywest is providing almost $800,000 in funding over three years to expand the Compassionate Community Connectors program and for the development of an online resource hub to support others in WA to develop their own Connector programs. The Compassionate Connector program draws on the research undertaken by our Chair Professor Samar Aoun here in the South West which found that when Community Connectors supported those in the community experiencing serious illness to develop their caregiving networks, they felt cared for and supported in times of need, less socially isolated and better able to engage in activities of daily living. The research also found that people who were supported by Compassionate Connectors were less likely to use hospital services. It was a pleasure to meet the Hon Samantha Rowe MLC who announced our Lotterywest grant and is pictured here with Steven Arnott - CEO at the Perron Institute, Prof Samar Aoun and our Deputy Chair, Dr Julieanne Hilbers. #CompassionateCommunities #compassionateconnectors

It was great to connect with the broader palliative care community today at the 2024 Palliative Care WA summit which explored the intersection between palliative care and neurodegenerative disease. Our Chair Professor Samar Aoun shared the research on Compassionate Communities which sparked some great conversations and we are excited about the potential for new collaborations with others moving forward. #CompassionateCommunities #publicpalliativecare

Our Chair Professor Samar Aoun was a plenary speaker at the European Grief Conference 2024 in Dublin this week. She was able to share her research which has helped to inspire the four-tiered needs-based bereavement care model. She was able to provide Australian insights on how a community-led Compassionate Communities approach contributes to Tier 0 (public education) and Tier 1 (access to information and support from family, social, and care networks). #compassionatecommunities #griefliteracy

We will be celebrating World Compassionate Communities day on Friday by announcing our 2024 Compassionate Bunbury Champions at an award ceremony at the City of Bunbury. #worldcompassionatecommunitiesday #growcompassion
The theme for Public Health Palliative Care International's World Compassionate Communities Day 2024 is neighbourhoods and celebrates the wonderful people doing amazing things to reduce loneliness, and support people who are seriously ill, dying, grieving or caregiving. Help grow compassion in our neighbourhoods and communities - LIKE and SHARE this post and: Tell us a story of someone who shows kindness in your neighbourhood OR Say thank you to someone who has done something kind for you OR Let us know what simple act of kindness you plan to do to ‘grow compassion’ in your neighbourhood. And remember to hashtag #worldcompassionatecommunitiesday #compassionatecommunitiesaustralia #growcompassion

This workshop is for those who wish to feel more confident when talking to someone who is grieving.
This workshop will explore grief and loss. Grief is a normal reaction to loss and loss touches everyone at some point. Loss and grief are often very painful and is not something to ‘quickly get over,’ rather, we integrate loss and grief slowly over time. This workshop will provide you with an understanding of the various types of losses commonly encountered, but most importantly, it will provide you with the tools to support yourself and others. Facilitated by Dr Margaret Sealey (PhD) who is a counsellor, researcher, educator, and thanatologist who has worked with vulnerable populations in health settings (palliative care and oncology in particular) for over 20 years. Her counselling practice specialises in grief, loss and end-of-life; her main area of research relates to bereavement risk assessment. Register @ https://lnkd.in/gkfC_-8P
