As Black History Month gives way to Women's History Month and Public Schools Week wraps up today, I feel honored to play a small editorial role in getting voices like Dr. Alena Zachery-Ross' out to a wider audience. My kids are fortunate to have been in a K-12 school district with solid leadership like hers. I don't take it for granted for a second. Being a superintendent is an incredibly tough and mostly thankless job. (Looking at you, everyone who complains about snow days being called or not called 😄 -- and that's just one tiny public-facing example of the pressure.)
#Superintendents have always lived in a fishbowl, with someone watching, listening to, or following their every word and action. But, says Dr. Alena Zachery-Ross, “The scrutiny has certainly increased with the heightened political atmosphere, as well as the heightened use of social media.” In the new episode of our Build Momentum for Education #podcast, Dr. Zachery-Ross shares what it’s like being one of the most visible #education #leaders within the district—in her case, Ypsilanti Public Schools in Michigan. “I see people now being very verbal about what they think the role of the superintendent is, what they want in terms of policy,” she says. And in addition feeling the same pressure as her fellow superintendents across the nation, Dr. Zachery-Ross has an even more unique #leadership experience as an African-American female superintendent in what has traditionally been a white male role. This episode digs deep into our Season 5 theme of humanizing the role of the superintendent.
