Many cities struggle to keep pedestrians safe on busy roads, especially where more foot traffic and poor visibility make crossings risky. Traditional crosswalks often fail to address these concerns, and installing AC-powered solutions can be costly and disruptive. Tualatin, Oregon, faced these very issues. To meet Tualatin’s needs, we partnered with Carmanah Technologies to implement an innovative, cost-effective solution: solar-powered Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) and overhead lighting systems. These advanced systems enhance visibility without requiring AC power, delivering reliable performance day and night—even during Oregon’s darkest winters. We're making a new thing! It'll be on street corners near you soon, probably, if you live in a town or city with crosswalks. It's the only solar-powered pedestrian pole with a wireless connection to the pedestrian signals - which seems super niche, but is a much faster to install and far more affordable way of adding accessible pedestrian signals to existing intersections than traditional poles. I'm excited, because I've had to sit on this news for forever and can finally talk about it, and also because this turns APS from something that took serious planning and funding to install into something cities can almost charge to petty cash and put up on weekends, and that's going to help so many people. #Accessibility
