With EURONAVAL around the corner (4-7 November), it is becoming increasingly clear that Maritime Domain Awareness requires of large amounts of daily imagery and a powerful AI platform to help D&I customers. Simply put, there are too many places where to look. This is why Planet is partnering with SynMax to provide actionable maritime intelligence (Military Vessel Behaviour Analysis, Trafficking, Bunkering, etc.) The Planet/Synmax delegation will be looking forward to meet with you next week in Hall 6, Booth L86. Matt Gilbert, Beatrice Mainas, Charles Cormack, Andrew Brettell, Trevor Otto Soyez les bienvenus

Russia to Offset Vessel Shortage Imposed by Western Sanctions on Arctic LNG 2 Project with Ship-to-Ship Transfers In response to Western sanctions limiting its access to essential ice-class tankers, Russia is taking steps to streamline its Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and gas condensate operations from its Arctic LNG 2 project. The country aims to boost the efficiency of cargo movements by employing ship-to-ship transfers, unloading cargo from specialized ice-class vessels to conventional tankers in the Barents and Bering Seas. This strategy allows ice-class tankers to quickly return to Arctic LNG terminals for further collections, mitigating the shortage imposed by sanctions. The sanctions, which particularly restrict the availability of ice-class vessels, have forced Russia to explore alternative logistical solutions to maintain the flow of LNG and gas condensates. By conducting ship-to-ship transfers at sea, Russia hopes to maximize the use of its limited fleet, ensuring that the critical ice-class vessels are not delayed in transit but remain focused on the Arctic terminals where their capabilities are most needed. As winter approaches and ice builds up in the Arctic, the demand for ice-class vessels is expected to rise dramatically, further intensifying logistical challenges. With additional sanctions set to take effect in March 2025, restricting entry to EU ports, Russia is racing against time to adapt its operations. If Russia moves forward with these plans, ship-to-ship transfer facilities are expected to be established at Chosha Bay, Barents Sea, and a further site at Kresta Bay in the Bering Sea. #Theia, SynMax Maritime’s maritime domain awareness platform, closely tracks developments related to Russia's Arctic LNG 2 project. By monitoring vessel movements and ship-to-ship activities in the region, #Theia provides critical, real-time intelligence on how Russia navigates the increasing constraints of Western sanctions. #ArcticLNG2 #ShipToShip #MDA #WhyGuessWhenYouCanKnow

The Azores, a volcanic archipelago in the North Atlantic under Portuguese jurisdiction, has announced a landmark decision: the establishment of a #MarineProtectedArea (𝘔𝘗𝘈) network covering 287,000 square kilometres. This is the largest #𝐌𝐏𝐀 network in the North Atlantic and is a monumental step toward safeguarding one of the world’s most unique and biodiverse marine environments. This new network ensures that 30% of the waters surrounding the Azores are now under protection—15% fully protected and 15% highly protected. The legislation introduces strict limitations on fishing and other extractive activities, in some areas banning them outright. These measures are designed to preserve the region's rich biodiversity, including coral reefs and marine species such as whales, dolphins, sharks, and a vast array of fish species. The Azores’ decision is more than just a local victory; it sets a powerful example for others to follow. At the last UN Biodiversity Conference, nations committed to protecting 30% of the world’s land and oceans by 2030. Yet, despite these ambitious promises, only 8% of the world’s oceans currently enjoy some level of protection. The Azores are showing the global community what can—and must—be done to meet these goals. However, simply designating #𝐌𝐏𝐀𝐬 is only the first step. The real challenge lies in enforcing these protections. Without effective monitoring and compliance, even the most well-intentioned initiatives risk falling short. This is where #Theia, SynMax’𝐬 maritime domain awareness platform, comes into play. #Theia leverages satellite imagery and near real-time vessel tracking to monitor activity within protected areas, identifying #illegalfishing and unregistered vessels with precision. With advanced AI-driven analytics, Theia offers authorities #actionableintelligence, ensuring that vessel movements are tracked, violations are detected, and protections are upheld. By integrating multiple data sources, Theia transforms raw data into evidential proof, enabling regulators to enforce restrictions and safeguard marine habitats. The creation of the largest #MPA network in the North Atlantic is a bold and necessary step, but its success depends on the ability to maintain and enforce these protections. With innovative tools like Theia, we can ensure that these new safeguards are more than symbolic, securing biodiversity and marine habitats for future generations. #𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 #𝘖𝘤𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 #𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘢 #𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 #𝘔𝘗𝘈 #𝘝𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 #𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘖𝘶𝘳𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘴
