It’s been fascinating to see the rise of AI coach bots and the excitement and angst that this has been creating in the coaching community. For the last couple of years, our Table Mountain team has been actively researching best-in-class AI coaches. We are embracing AI goal attainment coaching and are excited about a range of applications for Coach Vici. Goal attainment support is relevant in multiple domains, a few of which include leadership coaching, leadership development, change management, performance management and achievement of KPI’s. After careful consideration, Table Mountain decided to partner with Coach Vici, an AI Coach backed by peer reviewed research, developed by Professor Nicky Terblanche at the Stellenbosch University Business School. A well-designed, research-based AI coach can serve as a multiplier, increasing the reach and the impact that we can have with our clients. The advent of AI coach bots reminds me of the state of executive coaching many years ago, when we described what we were seeing as the “wild west” of coaching, where there were no clear standards of practice, and anyone could hang up a shingle to offer coaching services. If you have not yet had a chance to take a look at the burgeoning number of AI coach bots that are being developed, you might be surprised to find a number of these AI coaches advertising how much great advice they give, an interesting approach, given that coaching in this context is intended to be a non-directive, enquiry-based process. If you’re considering exploring an AI coach for your organization, we would encourage you to take a look at the research behind the AI Coach and make sure that the interaction meets the basic standards of practice we have come to recognize as coaching. In our journey preparing Coach Vici for launch, one of our lessons learned is that people who haven’t had experience working with a coach may have very different expectations about the nature of the coaching interaction than what we have in mind. When working with coachees in human coaching, it’s typical to help them understand how coaching works. In earlier iterations of Coach Vici, we did not include introductory text describing what coaching is and what it is not. As a result, we started getting feedback that people were expecting Coach Vici to give them more advice. People have quickly become accustomed to interacting with generative AI platforms that are quick to provide answers. It seems obvious in hindsight that we should’ve done more to set expectations about the nature of the coaching experience and the value of this type of interaction. We look forward to continuing to learn from and with our clients as we partner with Professor Nicky Terblanche and the team at Coach Vici to continue to develop an AI coach grounded in research and best practice. #ai #aicoach

🚀 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 🚀 I am a fan of Dr. Brian Little’s work and think his work on "personal projects" is a game-changer for how we view ourselves and our personalities. He suggests that our personalities are adaptable and can be shaped by our deliberate actions. Consider Phil Connors from "Groundhog Day"—Bill Murray’s character who finds himself reliving the same day repeatedly. Phil starts off as a self-centered cynic but gradually evolves into a more empathetic and proactive person. His transformation is a great example of how, with consistent effort and intention, we can influence our behaviors. Before diving in, it’s essential to keep this in mind: · Don’t expect radical changes; think in terms of minor adjustments. · Respect and appreciate your personality—it’s what makes you authentically you. Living in your most natural state will help you feel your best. · Each of us makes minor adjustments to adjust to shifting contexts. For example, I need to be very focused on details when proofreading. But it’s not natural for me. When focused on strategy, I am all about the big picture. I rely on others to help me see the details I know I’ll naturally miss. Dr. Little points out that these changes can be challenging because they often conflict with our innate personality traits. It's like trying to write with your non-dominant hand—it feels awkward at first, but with practice, it can become more natural. Research supports this, showing that with persistent effort, changes in traits like conscientiousness or emotional stability can be lasting. Other Big Five traits can be more challenging to sustain. Here’s how you can start shaping your personality through personal projects: 1. 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀: Think about what traits you’d like to develop or refine. Are you aiming to be more assertive or perhaps more meticulous? 2. 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀: Introduce small, manageable behaviors that align with your goals into your daily routine. 3. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲: Persistence is key. Regular practice helps cement these new behaviors into your personality. 4. 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸: Engage with colleagues and mentors to get feedback on your changes. This can provide motivation and help you adjust your approach as needed. 5. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆: Be mindful that pushing against your natural tendencies can be draining. Balance is crucial—ensure you're not overextending yourself. Take some time today to consider how personality personal projects could serve your goals. Tomorrow, I’ll wrap up this series by talking about how experience shapes our personality.

Members of our Table Mountain team had the opportunity undergo the Vertical Mindset Indicator (VMI) certification program this week. We are exited to share our knowledge about vertical development and how it can be utilized—stay tuned!
I am excited to announce that I will be undertaking my Vertical Mindset Indicator certification over the next two days. Vertical development is a transformative concept in the realms of leadership and personal growth, focusing on enhancing our ability to think, feel, and interact within increasingly complex, systemic, and interconnected frameworks. This approach goes beyond the scope of horizontal development, which primarily broadens our knowledge, skills, and competencies at a current level of complexity. Instead, vertical development is designed to elevate our cognitive and emotional capacities, empowering us to navigate through more intricate scenarios and challenges effectively. Stay tuned for updates following the completion of my certification. Exciting developments lie ahead – who knows what insights and opportunities might emerge? 🙂
