You can’t be what you can’t see! I often hear this when speaking with kaiako and at tech events. It’s a powerful reminder of why visibility in spaces like the NZ Hi-Tech Awards is so important. When our tamariki see Māori thriving in tech, it plants a seed of possibility for their future. At the same time, I’ve heard kōrero about Māori tech companies not getting the recognition they deserve. Here’s the thing: recognition starts with stepping forward. If we don’t put ourselves in the spotlight, how can we expect others to see us? E te iwi—if you’re creating something incredible, this is your time to shine. Representation matters—not just for us today, but for the rangatahi watching tomorrow. Callaghan Innovation is hosting a free online kōrero on 3 December. Join us for tools and insights to make your entry stand out. And here’s some exciting news: we’ve added a new question to the Hi-Tech Māori Kamupene o te Tau Award application. I can’t wait to share it with you! E rere ana he mihi maioha ki te whānau o Global Entrepreneurship Network New Zealand! We were pleased to be awarded the Māori Initiative of the Year last night at the GEN NZ Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Awards. Thank you to our board member Dr Karaitiana Taiuru JP, MInstD who accepted this on behalf of Tumu Whakarae Katie & our Te Hapori Matihiko whānau. A mihi also to our other category finalist, Ngā Waihua o Paerangi who are doing awesome mahi! Te Hapori Matihiko was created in response to a problem we saw - that Māori were underrepresented in digital and tech, and the Māori that were in tech were not visible. Digital worlds were being built for us without us. Māori represent about 5% of the industry and we’re on a mission to change that. We are advocates and cheerleaders for Māori in tech. Our solution was to create a supportive community, more opportunities to connect and learn from each other and, deliver an awards event in a truly kaupapa Māori way. Māori doing amazing things are now seen and celebrated every year. And importantly, our rangatahi now see possibility for themselves in the award winners. We have 1,200 members and supporters and we are growing. Over the last few weeks you will have seen the incredible impact of Māori, Tangata Tiriti, iwi and tauiwi coming together and we would love to see that kotahitanga continue. It’s in the very make up of entrepreneurs like those awarded last night to unite, make connections and find shared understanding. We look forward to continuing this mahi! 💜 📸 Photo credit: Kaye Maree Dunn
