Lindsay Calabrese, our Culture and Brand Partnerships Director, has some sound advice for community building...
Creators, Culture Drivers and Community Strategy + Partnerships with a focus on Growth, Cultural Impact + Innovation. Brand Partnerships & Culture Director at Team One.
Doing research on brands that have built strong communities vs communities that have formed around a brand. And it's no surprise that some of the strongest brand communities aren’t built by brands at all. They emerge organically, claimed, reshaped, and amplified (their version of it) by the people who it resonates with the most. The Lo-Life movement is pretty fascinating. In the late ‘80s, two Brooklyn street crews—Ralphie’s Kids and Polo U.S.A. united under a shared obsession, Polo Ralph Lauren. At the time, Polo was a symbol of country club wealth, something far removed from their reality. But they made it their own. Unlike Polo’s original audience, Lo-Lifes went all in—layering oversized fits, mixing colors, and treating logos like trophies. The loudest, rarest pieces became street currency. And it wasn’t just fashion. It was a flex. A survival tactic. And a statement. Some examples include *** Snow Beach jacket (immortalized by Raekwon in Wu-Tang’s "Can It Be All So Simple") ***1992 Stadium Collection (Olympic-inspired, with bold “P-Wing” designs) *** Polo Bear sweaters (once a niche novelty, now a cult favorite) *** Crest logos & cross flags (symbols of exclusivity, redefined on the streets) At first, Ralph Lauren ignored the movement. But hip-hop didn’t. Grand Puba, Thirstin Howl III, Raekwon, and Kanye West all helped turn Lo-Life style into a cornerstone of streetwear. And today, you can see its DNA in brands like Supreme, KITH, and Aime Leon Dore, all blending prep and street culture. Eventually, Polo itself leaned in. The Snow Beach re-release in 2018 was a nod to the movement, and collaborations with Lo-Life figures further blurred the lines between exclusivity and cultural adoption. A brand that was built for the elite was reclaimed by those it never intended to serve. It’s proof that fashion isn’t just about consumption, it's about identity, reinvention and access (because when you're shut out, you make your own way). Brands don't always control their own narratives. People do. Communities do. And when communities adopt your brand and remix it to make it their own, it's culturally unstoppable. So embrace it. Give them a nod. And allow it to breathe new life into your brand.

"Since there were no brand constraints, I was free to adopt a different design sensibility than I’d normally apply when designing a Taylor guitar. Which was a little terrifying. If there are no boundaries, what was I going to make?" Alongside Team One CSO Mark Miller, Andy Powers-CEO, President and Chief Guitar designer at Taylor Guitars-tells his story of building a new innovative electric guitar brand, and the challenge of designing an instrument that would be truly innovative and irreplaceable to the most discerning of musicians. In a world where so many people struggle to be seen and heard, KB Home’s new “We See You” brand platform resonates loudly. It clearly articulates the company’s passion for putting the customer at the center of everything they do. To help KB Home tell their “We See You” story in an emotional way, we started with a segment of society that’s famously unheard, children. Because if a company’s employees are sensitive enough to notice the needs of a child, they can surely take note of a paying customer’s needs, lifestyle, and budget. Beautifully directed by Benjamin Sonntag, “New Beginnings” is the heartwarming story of a young girl’s reluctance to move, and how the KB team partners with her parents to ease the girl’s transition. Congratulations to our KB Home clients and our Team One crew. This one is special.
