With cities across the nation facing the fallout of extreme weather, an Army-invented double-roof protection system could change the way we protect communities from natural forces like tornadoes and hurricanes. Initially designed as a blast barrier for military use, the inexpensive modular barrier can be configured in various ways to protect people and buildings. Nearly 4 in 10 Americans live in places with poor air quality. Pollutants are present both indoors and out, making it vital to detect and address unhealthy levels of ozone and particle pollution. Using the Navy’s rechargeable zinc battery, an engineering firm called Enzinc developed a range of new, mass-manufactured power sources for microgrids, electric vehicles, and military applications. The DOD is on the cutting edge of medical research. As the authorized tech transfer partner of the DOD for 25 years, TechLink helps DOD research benefit not only the military, but also the general public. Through an agreement with the Army, Mapp Biopharmaceutical commercialized an equipment sterilization solution to combat Ebola worldwide, particularly in West Africa. First developed to protect U.S. warfighters, technology transfer made it possible for this solution to help countless others around the globe.
