Today we commemorate the 25th anniversary of Baku Pogrom, one of the most horrifying and vicious acts of violence perpetrated against the Armenian people after the Armenian genocide of 1915. Starting on January 12, 1990, a seven-day pogrom broke out against the Armenian civilian population in Baku during which Armenian people were mercilessly beaten, tortured, murdered, and expelled from the city en masse by the Azeri mobs that also conducted a large number of aggressive raids on apartments, robberies, and arsons. One of the most insightful and eye-opening testimonies of the unspeakable violence that Armenians suffered at the hands of Azeri aggressors during the Baku Pogrom was given by Garry Kasparov, one of my biggest role models, who gained unprecedented amount of fame and respect on an international level due to being perhaps the most successful chess grandmaster in history, the most famous opposition figure in Putin's russia, and a globally renowned advocate for human rights and civil liberties, who hasn't spoken time and again only to raise awareness about his Armenian compatriots but also numerous other people who have been suffering under authoritarian regimes throughout the entire world or being threatened by them in one way or another. Despite Kasparov (whose mother changed her last name "Kasparian" to avoid persecution by the Azeri majority that was living in Baku and its surroundings) and his family being above-averagely wealthy for that time, they were forced to flee from the city, together with tens of thousands of Armenias who back then resided in Baku. Even though, he has been by far the most vocal about the necessity to once and for all defeat russia especially since the russian unprovoked military invasion and occupation of Ukraine and he took a harder stance against russia than almost anyone else, he has never forgotten to publicly and directly call for international recognition of the Armenian genocide and has often warned about the looming russian (and Azeri) threat to Armenia. With that being said, may all the innocent Armenians who lost their lives during this horrible ma$$a©r€ rest in peace and may their memory be a blessing 🙏 🇦🇲🙏☦️🙏✝️🙏 https://lnkd.in/ddn9UEBb
