North Korean hackers stole $1.34 billion in cryptocurrency in 2024, across 47 cyberattacks. This accounts for 61% of all stolen crypto this year, a 21% increase from 2023. Most thefts happened from January to July, including major hacks like $305 million from DMM Bitcoin in May and $235 million from WazirX in July. DeFi platforms were the hardest hit, followed by centralized services. Private key compromises caused 44% of losses, showing the need for stronger key protection, even as security audits have reduced system flaws. The stolen funds are linked to North Korea's efforts to fund weapons programs. Hackers have also increased smaller-scale attacks, targeting wallets and platforms.
