Our CA TELONE™ Specialist Brian Hegland is onsite this week at the Almond Conference in Sacramento, CA. If you're attending the event, be sure to stop by booth #1631 to say hi! Almonds—along with many other nuts and orchards—are susceptible to prunus replant disease, and growers rely on soil fumigation when they are replacing old orchards with new trees. Prepping the soil with TELONE™ or a TELONE™ chloropicrin mix creates a zone of protection for tree roots to establish into healthy trees. Almond trees planted in soil prepped with TELONE™ show increases in trunk diameter and tree canopies compared to trees planted in untreated soil. This leads to increases in yields that can add up to significant amounts over the decades' lifespan of the orchard. PNW TELONE™ Specialist Robin Matson is onsite this week at the Northwest Hort Expo in Kennewick, WA. The NW Hort Expo is held annually in conjunction with the Washington State Tree Fruit Association’s Annual Convention. The NW Hort Expo is an event where horticulture exhibitors demonstrate their products, educate clients on services, and share information on the latest applied horticulture research. Robin shared that this year's event included a lot of new technology coming out for fruit growing, as well as new apple variety from Washington State University called WA-64 that has good growing attributes and a sweet-tart flavor. As a silver sponsor of the event, Robin had the chance to mingle with several TELONE™ customers as well as growers interested in learning more about nematode management. Orchard growers in the PNW often face high nematode pressure and prepping the soil with TELONE™ before planting helps create a zone of protection, allowing roots to establish into healthy trees with increased trunk diameters and larger canopies. Remember, there's no coming back from a poor start—especially in orchards! TELONE™ Specialists Chris Hays and Dusty Allen are onsite at the National Onion Association's Annual Meeting in Savannah, GA. This event is a great opportunity to stay up-to-date on industry trends, attend educational talks, and go offsite for field tours. In the pictures below, Dusty and Chris visited Vidalia onion fields and from Bland Farms and G&R Farms, as well as an onion packing house. Onion growers across the country face a wide range of issues, including how to best manage nematodes which can cause significant damage to both quality and yield. Growers know nothing works better than TELONE™ to suppress nematodes. Prepping the soil ahead of planting helps create a zone of protection allowing young onions to establish into healthy plants. Remember, there's no coming back from a poor start! Onion growers in the Pacific Northwest are wrapping up their final TELONE™ applications for the year. TELONE™ helps suppress the most common nematodes for onions, including: • Root-lesion nematode (Pratylenchus spp.) • Root-knot nematode (Meloidognye hapla) • Columbia Root-Knot Nematode (Meloidogyne chitwoodi) • Southern Root-Knot Nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) • Stem nematode (Ditylenchus dipsaci) • Stubby-root nematode (Paratrichodorus spp. and Trichodorus spp.). In addition to nematode suppression, TELONE™/chloropicrin blends help manage soil-borne diseases that affect onions, including: • Fusarium Basal Rot (Fusarium oxysporum) • Pink Root (Phoma terrestris) • Rhizoctonia (Rhizoctonia solani) Nematodes damage onions both above and below ground. Above ground, plants may show symptoms like stunted growth and leaf yellowing. Below ground, nematodes feed on onion roots, causing poor root development, leading to smaller bulbs, deformed onions, and lower marketable yields. Set yourself up for a successful onion season by prepping your soil with a TELONE™/chloropicrin blend ahead of planting. Remember, there's no coming back from a poor start! One of the key benefits of TELONE™ is its ability to adapt to various field conditions and application methods, allowing growers to address their specific pest control needs efficiently with a more prescriptive approach. Whether dealing with concentrated pest populations in row crops or more widespread infestations in broadcast crops, TELONE™ offers the flexibility to choose the method that best aligns with your farming practices. This adaptability, combined with TELONE™’s proven efficacy, makes it a preferred choice for growers seeking to protect their crops from yield-damaging nematodes. Furthermore, TELONE™ is compatible with many sustainable farming practices, such as the use of TIF and precision drip irrigation systems, allowing farmers to maintain a focus on environmental stewardship while optimizing pest management. When Teleos President John Godbehere was in Japan visiting sweetpotato growing regions, he had the chance to tour the Kirishima Distillery. Kirishima Shuzo is a traditional honkaku shochu distillery founded in 1916 in Miyazaki prefecture, Kyushu, and the country’s leading shochu producer. Shochu is a spirit distilled from sweetpotatoes and a very popular beverage across Japan. Sweetpotato harvest typically occurs in late summer through early winter, and small distilleries often begin production in August or September. Larger distilleries have more mechanized operations that allow them to freeze steamed sweetpotatoes for distillation year-round. While there are more than 50 varieties of sweetpotatoes that can be used to make shochu, the most common variety is kogane sengan, which has specifically been cultivated for shochu production. This varietal is known for its large size, white flesh, and high starch content—which leads to higher alcohol content. Artisanal shochu distilleries often use the smaller and sweeter sweetpotatoes that are found roasted and sold in stores, called satsuma imo. These craft shochus are often more expensive but evoke the flavors and aromas of the beloved roasted sweetpotatoes found throughout Japan. Because sweetpotatoes are often affected by nematodes, John shared with the Kirishima team how TELONE™ can help suppress nematodes and help improve both yields and quality. We even talked about setting up a trial on one of Kirishima’s sweetpotato fields next season! Interested in learning more about TELONE™ for your sweetpotatoes? Visit www.teleosag.com. Root-lesion nematodes (RLNs) are so small that they can't be seen with the naked eye. They have a syringe-like "stylet" at their head end that they use to break open plant root cells and extract nutrients. RLNs are one of the most damaging plant-parasitic nematodes in the world. They can be found in almost any soil texture and can damage over 400 crop plant species, including many of the specialty crops grown in the USA. Root-lesion nematodes can cause necrotic lesions (dark spots of dead tissue) on the roots of plants, which ultimately lead to negative impacts on quality and yield loss. Learn how TELONE™ can protect your future harvests from destructive nematodes. www.teleosag.com Remember, there's no coming back from a poor start! #TELONE #thebestdefenseagainstnematodes #rootlesionnematodes #integratedpestmanagement #IPM #specialtycrops #soilhealth #healthysoil
