Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center in Florida is the first hospital in the Southeastern U.S. to successfully implement the SavvyWire® guidewire technology in transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) valve-in-valve procedures. The SavvyWire® guidewire is the first-and-only sensor-guided Transcatheter valve replacement solution, designed to enhance procedural efficiency and effectiveness. By combining performance, pressure, and pacing capabilities into a single device, SavvyWire® replaces multiple traditional tools, including the TMVR guidewire, access kit, pacing lead, closure device, and transducer. This streamlining of the procedure reduces the number of devices required, minimizes the need for additional venous access, and enhances overall workflow efficiency. Read more: https://bit.ly/4284UBW

The MitraClip, developed by Abbott, is now available at Piedmont Medical Center - Rock Hill, in South Carolina, to treat patients with a leaking heart valve, known as mitral valve regurgitation (MR). When left untreated, MR can lead to heart failure and death. The FDA-approved procedure is minimally invasive and involves inserting a small clip, known as the MitraClip®, through a catheter in a vein in the leg to reach the heart. The clip is then attached to the mitral valve to help it close more completely. By improving the valve’s function, the procedure aims to alleviate MR symptoms – like shortness of breath and fatigue, heart failure – and to ultimately improve overall health. UC Davis Health and Doctors Medical Center (DMC) in Modesto, California, have created a residency partnership which includes medical education residency programs in cardiothoracic surgery (surgery on the chest organs, such as the heart, lungs and esophagus) and obstetrics/gynecology (OB/GYN), which includes gynecological surgeries. Both programs offer elective and required rotations to allow for a broad scope of high-quality training for physicians. The multifaceted agreement is expected to positively impact Central Valley communities – both immediately and in the future. The partnership adds significant value for physician residents eager to gain clinical experience outside of Sacramento, especially in more rural and underserved settings. The Charach Cancer Treatment Center at DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital is the first in Michigan to treat patients with the first portable scalp cooling device to reduce hair loss for patients undergoing chemotherapy. The Amma Portable Scalp Cooling Cap provides an innovative way to protect patients’ hair, giving them a sense of control and privacy during a vulnerable time. This scalp cooling device works by reducing blood flow to hair follicles, minimizing exposure to chemotherapy drugs, and thus reducing the risk of hair loss. Because it is portable, patients can be mobile and leave the infusion chair to complete their scalp cooling therapy anywhere in the infusion center. Read more: https://bit.ly/3Vn3i2K

Delray Medical is the first hospital in South Florida to enroll a patient in the PICASSO trial, aimed at improving management for stroke patients with tandem occlusions. Tandem occlusions occur when a stroke in the brain is accompanied by a narrowing or blockage in the neck artery, limiting blood flow to critical areas. The PICASSO trial compares two distinct treatment approaches: stenting the artery to keep it open or performing angioplasty, a minimally invasive procedure that uses a balloon to restore blood flow. The PICASSO National Steering Committee praised the team at Delray Medical Center for their dedication to advancing stroke care. Read more: https://bit.ly/4g0lJlF

Thanks to coordination of care, innovative technology, and advanced techniques, two of the Central Valley Doctors Health System hospitals in California were able to take quick action to save a young mother’s life and her heart. The 26-year-old patient went into cardiac arrest as she was prepped for a gall bladder procedure at Emanuel Medical Center (EMC) in Turlock, California. She urgently needed a transfer to a facility with the highest acuity of heart care. Teams at EMC and Doctors Medical Center (DMC) of Modesto coordinated the patient’s care and 19-mile airlift to DMC. There, a cardiothoracic surgeon implemented the Impella – the world’s smallest type of heart pump – to assist with blood flow, allowing the patient’s heart to rest and recover.
