DPS’ new Border Mounted Patrol Unit, which graduated its inaugural class on Nov. 22, made its first apprehension in Maverick County this week. Working with a DPS K-9, the Border Mounted Patrol Unit apprehended two illegal immigrants after a nearly 11-mile track. The two illegal immigrants, from Mexico, were attempting to evade capture by traversing through multiple ranches. #OperationLoneStar

Every year, DPS employees come together to provide gifts for children in the care of Child Protective Services as part of the annual Holiday Wishes campaign. Today, we loaded up gifts to make their way to 320 children in Central Texas who are in state care. DPS employees from every division and every region of the state, along with some DPS retirees, helped sponsor gifts for these children. This annual toy drive is run through the State Agency Council under the Texas Governor's Commission for Women. It was truly a special day for the department, and we hope these gifts brighten these children's day.

One of the last training events that Trooper Trainees complete during their time at the DPS Academy is the Joint Field Training Exercise (JFTX). This exercise puts Trooper Trainees through real-life scenarios — from high-risk stops to crisis intervention — to simulate a potential day in the life of a Texas State Trooper. FOX 7 Austin joined DPS and Trooper Trainees from Class B-2024 in Florence yesterday for a first-hand look at JFTX and the comprehensive training our Trooper Trainees undergo at the DPS Academy. Class B-2024 is set to graduate from the DPS Academy on December 13.

Today, we’d like to offer our gratitude to DPS Canine Jake who retired from his official duties at the end of the November. Jake made history as the first Explosive Ordinance Detection Canine to be assigned to Executive Protection Bureau (EPB). He has served EPB since November 2018 — playing a vital role in safeguarding our state and its leaders. Over his career, Jake has completed missions in nearly every DPS Region. He has also served honorably at the Texas Capitol and the Governor’s Mansion. Along with his handler Trooper Ruiz, Jake has provided security for many U.S. State Governors, Heads of State and foreign dignitaries. Jake has also worked with current and former U.S. Presidents. His dedication and hard work has contributed to the safety of Texans, visitors and government leaders — and we will always be thankful for Jake’s service as a valued member of DPS and EPB. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement, Jake!

Yesterday was a special day for DPS, as Colonel Freeman Martin was sworn in as our new Director during a Change of Command Ceremony in Austin. Director Martin has worked to protect and serve the people of Texas as a member of DPS since 1990 when he began his career as a Texas Highway Patrol Trooper. He has risen through the ranks and served in roles from Trooper to Sergeant to Texas Ranger to Regional Director, and most recently, as Senior Deputy Director. For three decades, Director Martin has dedicated his life and his career to public safety and DPS. The department and our people are lucky to have Director Martin leading the way as we continue to ensure the safety and security of the great state of Texas.
