✅Another great Teach For America North Carolina board retreat with our Charlotte-Piedmont Triad advisory board! ✅ We were excited to have our meeting at Martin Luther King Middle School where TFA NC has two alumni assistant principals - Ayanna Barry-Buchanan and Colleen Elisabeth Grosse (on her way to becoming Dr. Grosse!) and corps members in the 1st and second years of teaching. We were also excited to recognize Principal Savage - one of our many great partner principals who had a surprise reuniting with TFA NC board member Ann Clark. We heard from our alums, visited clasrooms and also strategized about what's next for us as we celebrate 20 years of work in Charlotte and 10 in the Triad. More to come! We ❤️ our TFA NC advisory boards! Our Eastern NC/Triangle advisory board convened for a retreat at GW Carver Elementary in Edgecombe County this week to get proximate and provide insight. During our time we heard from GW Carver TFA NC alumna and Assistant Principal Ryan Thorne and got a chance to hear from our Teach For America Ignite Fellowship site leader at the school! In addition to org updates from our ED our TFA NC staff led advisory board management team Elizabeth O'Quinn Mariam Tisdale and Mandy Mudd created and led a design sprint as we continue to deepen our focus on our 2030 goal. Thanks to teammates Taylor Myers, M.Ed. and Jennifer Freeman for also stopping by the meeting via Zoom with updates. Last week members of the Teach For America North Carolina team attended the Equitable Foundation's Educator Development Partner Convening. Hosted by Equitable Foundation President Jarian Kerekes in partnership with Dheepa Johnston the TFA NC team engaged with orgs and colleagues from across the nation. And as always there are not too many rooms where you do not run into a TFA alum! It was great to meet Dr. LouAnn Ross, EDD, MPPM, MAED, Moseka Medlock, and David Donaldson alongside others in the work. Philanthropy + Education: Special thanks to Ashley D. Varnado and Will Manning and the Bank of America Private Bank team for hosting a intimate breakfast convening with their clients focused on philanthropy and education this morning at the Bank of America Tower. I had the opportunity to represent Teach For America North Carolina on a panel alongside other non-profit CEO/ED leaders Men Tchaas Ari, MPA of Communities In Schools of Charlotte Mecklenburg, Inc and Kate Weaver of NAMI and moderated by Atrium Health's Donnie Mitchem to discuss challenges facing educators and education leaders and mental health. Our new statewide head of development for TFA NC Allie Hanson joined me at the event. As we closed, I shared with the audience to think about their favorite teacher in K-12...we all have one! At Teach For America we believe that every child deserves access to an excellent education, and that starts with classroom educators and those in educational leadership (its both!). I asked them to continue their curiosity about education and the investment of their time and treasure. We can't give up on our kids. This Veterans Day, we recognize the powerful intersection of service and education—a bond that shapes leaders, strengthens communities, and extends beyond the classroom or the battlefield. For Alexander M. Clark (San Antonio ’12), a TFA alumni whose life reflects both, this dedication to service began by example. Inspired by his grandfather’s 26 years of military service, Alexander almost enlisted right out of high school. However, his grandfather underscored the importance of education and encouraged him to go to college first. After college, Alexander joined Teach For America, dedicating himself to third-grade students in San Antonio. His TFA experience fueled a deeper commitment to service, leading him to enlist in the Air Force Reserve as an intelligence analyst. Later, with support from his TFA network, Alexander pursued law school, co-founding the Texas Law Veterans Association to support veterans on campus. Today, Alexander carries forward the values instilled in him by both his grandfather and his mentors: teamwork, mission, and service beyond self. His journey reminds us that serving others—whether in the classroom or military—is a calling that lasts a lifetime. To all who served and are currently serving, we thank you. #VeteransDay
