Leveraging the power and passion of sports to transform the lives of urban youth.

About us

Founded in 2013, The BASE is an urban academy that leverages sports as a vehicle to engage youth in a positive, success-driven culture. With high-quality athletic training, coaching, and competition, paired with personalized academic support, we cultivate and highlight urban talent and build pathways to college, career, and success in life. Partnership is a key facet of our work at The BASE. We purposefully build and leverage relationships with diverse leaders and local institutions to provide young people opportunities and access to the industries driving the 21st Century economy. Beyond our direct service programming, The BASE aims to inspire a national movement of citizens who believe in the incredible talent and ability of urban young people. We aim to shift the national mindset about what it takes for urban youth to succeed and are building a movement of citizens committed to their success.

  • A group of BASE student-athletes recently participated in a Career Chat with the Commercial Brokers Association (CBA) Future Leaders Program, learning about careers in commercial real estate and the pathways to get there. Huge thanks to our friends at the CBA for hosting us and continuously including The BASE and our young people in your community engagement efforts. We are proud to be the CBA's Charitable Partner and recipient of the 2024 Diversity Impact Fund. This is the Power of Partnership in action! #careerdevelopment #commercialrealestate #communityengagement

We are thrilled to announce we recently purchased our facility at 150 Shirley St., along with the adjacent lot at 136 Shirley St., in Roxbury. As a result, in the years ahead we will have the capacity to make deeper investments in programs and serve more young people and families. The BASE is now a property owner with a vested stake in the future of Roxbury and the Newmarket neighborhood. Our vision is to create long-term, intergenerational impact through sports and education, developing young leaders to succeed and become property owners, themselves, right here in Boston.    We are grateful for all those who contributed at this critical juncture for The BASE. Foremost, we would like to thank our lead partner, the Yawkey Foundation, who awarded a $1.5 million Transformational Grant for the purchase, design and renovations of the building. The grant further cements our longstanding relationship and includes the renaming of the facility to the Yawkey Urban Sports Complex: Home of The BASE.   In addition, we thank Sandy & Paul Edgerley, Barbara & Amos Hostetter, Anne Lovett & Steve Woodsum, Tristin & Martin Mannion, Brooke & Will Muggia, Dana & Rob Smith, Stephanie & Brian Spector, The Boston Foundation, Eastern Bank, and several anonymous supporters. Thanks to the support of these families and institutions, and the leadership of BASE President & CEO Steph Lewis and our Board of Directors, The BASE will be a permanent resource in #Roxbury. We couldn't be more proud, and we look forward to deepening our impact with Boston's amazing young people and families.
