Here’s some happy news to start your week: Between 2014 and 2024, we’ve seen a more than 50% decrease in the number of people at risk of trachoma -- from about 203 million then to about 103 million now. The Carter Center is a founding member of the WHO Alliance for the Global Elimination of Trachoma (GET 2020) and the International Coalition of Trachoma Control, and we are proud to be part of the global effort to end this blinding disease. We look forward to more and more countries being validated by the World Health Organization as having eliminated trachoma as a public health problem.

Congratulations to our CEO Paige Alexander on this incredible honor!
Yesterday we had the honour to bestow “Officer of the Order of the Crown” on Mrs. Paige Alexander, in recognition of services rendered to Belgium as ordained by His Majesty King Philippe. 🎖️ The Order of the Crown is one of the royal orders, already dating back to 1897. Since then, the Order of the Crown is used to distinguish Belgians for their artistic, literary, or scientific merits or distinguish Belgians and third nationals who have rendered service to the country of Belgium. 👑 As CEO of The Carter Center, Paige has been instrumental in continuing to promote peace and conflict resolution and mental health worldwide following the principles of its founders President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter; and leads the organization in new directions not shying away from issues at home, here in the USA.🌍 Her distinguished global development career allowed her to discover many regions of the world and also brought her regularly to Belgium where she took a fond appreciation for our country. Through her work and beyond, Paige embodies and strengthens our shared values of human rights, peace and democracy and the longstanding cooperation between Belgium and the Carter Center enables us to shape and build a better world together. 🤝 Belgium is grateful to consider the Carter Center a reliable partner, be it here in Atlanta or in Africa, for collaborating on events, projects and assist visiting delegations with interesting programs about their projects. As it is important that a country applauds and recognizes those voices, especially when we act jointly through programs to improve, touch and change the lives of many, a formal distinction is in order to showcase these bonds. Congratulations Paige Alexander, we thank you for your services to Belgium! ✨ Embassy of Belgium in the United States of America, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Belgium, World Affairs Council of Atlanta, Katherine Raeymaekers

The Carter Center has been tracking Syria’s civil war and what groups control which parts of the country for a decade. The New York Times used this research in a story about the recent escalation of the conflict: bit.ly/3OLWoR7 As dynamics shift, it’s critical for actors to protect civilians and ensure unrestricted access to humanitarian aid across Syria.
