The Center for Educational Leadership (CEL) partners with courageous leaders in classrooms, schools, and systems that support them to eliminate educational inequities by creating cultures of rigorous teaching, learning and leading. CEL believes educational justice lies in the development of leadership capacity―specifically nurturing the will to act on behalf of the most underserved students while increasing leadership knowledge and skill to dramatically improve the quality of instruction. As a nonprofit center within the University of Washington College of Education, our access to current research and best practices makes our work toward this goal especially effective. Thank you to our Lake Washington School District partners and the attendees of the Learning Forward session on empowering principals as equity-driven instructional leaders. Lake Washington SD Associate Superintendent Dale Cote, along with a principal supervisor and their partner principal, shared how they move from satellite, or big-picture data, to street-level data gathered from observing and interviewing students to better understand a specific student learning challenge. With these observations, leaders are able to consider implications for teacher practice and the support needed from the school and central office to help tackle the learning challenge.

Listening to Students: A Leadership Practice That Transforms Schools Engaging students in meaningful conversations about their experiences isn’t a one-time activity—it’s a foundational practice for creating equitable and impactful schools. At the University of Washington Center for Educational Leadership, we partner with leaders to incorporate student voice into their regular leadership practice. In a recent professional learning session, educational leaders from the Yakima Valley, Washington planned future listening sessions with students. They considered key elements to ensure sessions are inclusive and meaningful: Who is sharing their stories? How are students grouped? (e.g., by gender, grade level, or race) Who is facilitating the conversation? What is the session format? (e.g., one-on-one, small group, or whole class) What languages are spoken? How is the session communicated to students in advance? These leaders are taking deliberate steps to hear from students in ways that honor their unique identities and lived experiences. How do you make space for student voice in your leadership practice?

What an amazing few days with Max Silverman of The Center for Educational Leadership in the Principal Support Series where District Leaders and Principals come together at the University of Minnesota as a team to co-create their work. Max and I are honored to engage with leaders from Cohort 1: School District 197 (West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan, MN), Rochester Public Schools ISD #535, Eastern Carver County Schools, Bloomington Public Schools and Cohort 2: Saint Paul Public Schools, White Bear Lake Area Schools, ISD #624, Roseville Area Schools, Columbia Heights Public Schools and Hopkins Public Schools. These three days remind me -again- why public education is in good hands in MN.
