Hello Everyone! The Climate Mobility Action Newsletter will start to feature different individuals every week on topics around climate mobility! Today we have Carlos Shanka B. who is a young climate advocate from the Canary Islands, Spain, and half Senegalese. Born and raised there, I witnessed the growing intake of irregular migrants starting from the late 90s to early 2000s from Western and Northern Africa. As of today, we host the most dangerous migratory route in the world, and there is a myriad of reasons why people cross by small wooden boats - aka "pateras" - risking their lives for many days in the sea. One of them, often under covered but growingly influential and relevant, is climate change. Climate-induced is increasing the vulnerability of many exposed livelihoods in certain regions. A good example is the droughts in Mali that lead to a large human-displacement phenomenon in the region. Carlos shares his insights on the impacts of climate change in the Canary Islands and other great climate work he as done. Hello Everyone! Here are some terms that are used when writing and discussing about climate mobility. Before we start it is important to understand the importance of language and how it is used when talking about climate mobility. Using terms like climate migration and climate mobility are vital for communicating the effects climate change has on people on the move or being forced to migrate. Climate change can further exacerbate already existing and new vulnerabilities. Which could lead to one choosing to leave or not. When it comes to understanding disaster displacement they are not all climate related. They can be because of other impacts like conflict or a lack of adaptability to climate change. As climate change continues to be more extreme people will be at risk or forced to flee from their homes. Climate Mobility Concepts: Climate Mobility: Is the movement of people because of environmental impacts like rising sea levels, droughts, temperature increases and other such impacts related to the environmental changes. Climate Displacement: Is the involuntary movement of people as a reaction to sudden or developing changes in climate like the impacts of a disaster. Climate Disasters: Is the impacts of climate change when it comes to floods, storms, wildfires, and other major drives of global human mobility.
