When James Preston Lyons had to leave his Ivy League dream behind during the Great Depression, he vowed to ensure other students wouldn’t face the same financial barrier. In 1987, he fulfilled that promise by creating the Nancy Penn Lyons Scholarship in honor of his beloved wife. For decades, this scholarship has helped Georgia students bridge the financial gap to pursue their dreams. Discover how this legacy—and others like it—are shaping futures. Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta reposted this
Last week at the Philanthropy Southeast annual conference I wrapped up my time in the Hull Fellows Leadership Program with a presentation with my Capstone group on grant reporting and evaluation. It’s hard to put into words how valuable this experience has been for me – I’ve deepened my knowledge around best practices in philanthropy and learned about exciting new innovations and possibilities in the field, but at least as impactful were the connections I’ve made with my fellow cohort members. The passion, intelligence, innovation, and kindness of my fellow cohort members gives me such hope and inspiration for the future of Philanthropy. I’ve learned so much with and from this group, and I have to give a special shout out to my incredible Capstone group – Katy Sides, Alison Duncan, Casey Wright Hinton, Whitney Weeks, and Jay Kennedy. The conversations we had around our reporting and evaluation practices, the ideas we talked through, and the support we shared for each other both professionally and personally will all stick with me for the long-term. I also want to lift up my amazing mentor, Tamela Spann – her example of how to approach philanthropy with compassion, creativity, and a true love for community has helped me better understand who I want to be in this space. I am so grateful to Philanthropy Southeast for this opportunity, and to the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta for supporting me in continuing this fellowship. Congratulations Class of 2024 – we did it! 🎉🎉🎉
