Voters beware! Slow down. Pause before you post. Consider that some posts in your feed are designed to manipulate and deceive in order to divide. “…the IC has been observing foreign adversaries, particularly Russia, conducting additional influence operations intended to undermine public confidence in the integrity of U.S. elections and stoke divisions among Americans. The IC expects these activities will intensify through election day and in the coming weeks, and that foreign influence narratives will focus on swing states.”

Voters beware! Excellent report by Microsoft Threat Intelligence on foreign influence campaigns targeting US voters. Be informed. Don’t confuse unverified social media content for serious news. Disregard suspicious posts. Too salacious to ignore? Probably is fake! Disregard and move on. Don’t engage with manipulative content. https://lnkd.in/dxTF9uWw

Excellent reporting on Russian #disinformation tactics, techniques and procedures. These tactics are well understood by academics and researchers yet far too few people are getting the message - or changing their online behaviors. Awareness is Job One! https://lnkd.in/dxZgq3Jz

A little throwback into the history of influence campaigns! Misinformation didn't begin with the rise of AI and online media. Foreign governments have been attempting to alter the decisions of policymakers for centuries -- and sometimes, they have succeeded. This article from POLITICO is a fascinating case study from the 19th century on the U.S.'s first foreign lobbying scandal. In addition to being a cool bit of history, it reflects one reason why TIM is committed to promoting and protecting information quality. As foreign influence strategies have advanced, so have the tools we use to protect quality information, like our upcoming Election Integrity Dashboard. Disinformation awareness (actors and tactics), civics education, media and digital literacy, and critical thinking skills work together to defeat #disinformation. We need to prepare young people for life and politics in the digital information age. Let’s make a #betterdigitalfuture. Awareness is Job One.
With less than two months until Election Day, there have been questions around how best to bring the election into classrooms. Check out this conversation about how to navigate the elections with students using the Roadmap to Educating for American Democracy (EAD), featuring our CEO Louise Dube and EAD implementation consortium members Jane Kamensky (President and CEO of Monticello/Thomas Jefferson Foundation) and Peter Levine (Lincoln Filene Professor of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University). https://hubs.la/Q02Qsc730

You wouldn’t give kids keys to a car without first giving them driving lessons, so why are we letting kids access the internet and social media without first providing them with #MediaLiteracy education? Watch our new PSA 'Before you hand over keys to the internet…' & help us spread the message: #MediaLiteracy is an essential skill that should be taught to all K-12 students! How you can help: 📺 Share our PSA on your social media channels ⚖ Reach out to your policymakers & ask them to prioritize media literacy education in your state 💜 Support our work with a donation - every bit helps as we advocate to get media literacy into more classrooms: https://lnkd.in/ePSMVSZT https://lnkd.in/eAEAJkxQ

82% of middle school students could not tell the difference between an online news story and an advertisement 😲 You might think "yikes!" but how can we expect kids to know something that we're not teaching them?! From our CEO, Erin McNeill “Media literacy is literacy in the 21st century, and we don’t start teaching literacy in high school...It’s an essential life skill that has to be built on a foundation, not rolled out at the last minute.” This is why we're working to get #MediaLiteracy education into K-12 schools across the country - our kids need to be taught these necessary skills. Awareness is job 1. Informed consumers are smart consumers. #buildabetterdigitalfuture.
A Northeastern University study of more than 2,000 multi-nation social media users found that teaching people about algorithms – especially how they curate content based on user engagement – reduces susceptibility to misinformation, improves the ability to identify inaccurate information and makes them less likely to share it. The researchers suggest that algorithm education should be added to media literacy programs to improve outcomes in addition to content moderation and fact-checking. https://lnkd.in/gD-55Ebq #LearnThenLike #StudyThenShare #PonderThenPost
