About us
The Domestic Violence Shelter, Inc. is a private, nonprofit organization that opened its doors in 1978 as one of the first three domestic violence shelters in Ohio. The Shelter was founded by a group of concerned citizens who were moved to provide much needed assistance to victims of domestic violence who found themselves in danger and no options for safety. The program began in an office downtown Mansfield with all volunteer staff. A few years later, a very generous community member donated a three story house. After several renovations, the house became a 4-bedroom shelter with administrative offices on the third floor. In 1998, The Shelter with a grant from Richland County Foundation purchased its current facility. In 2007, The Shelter became a dual-focused program, also providing 24/7 advocacy and support to survivors of sexual assault who present in the emergency room at OhioHealth Mansfield and Avita. In 2022, an annexed building was renovated to increase beds. Our current property has over 12,500 square feet with space to sleep 48 survivors. The Shelter has moved from providing primarily emergency shelter to becoming a full-service organization that provides a full range of services to survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

With just about 8 hours left in our #GivingTuesday campaign, we have $252 left to meet our $50,000 matching gift challenge!! Can you believe it?! Please help us cross the finish line by giving using the QR code or by visiting https://bit.ly/4eJSaDT. This year, the Domestic Violence Shelter faced at $200,000 budget shortfall. With a generous matching gift pledge from the Phillips Family Foundation, we hoped to cut that shortfall in half and raise $100,000 during this year's #RichlandGives campaign. The campaign ends today at 7pm and we are just $252 shy of reaching that goal!! Will you help us continue providing safety, support, and resources to the survivors of sexual assault, abuse, and trafficking in our midst? Your generous (and tax deductible 😉) donation means the world to us and to those we serve. THANK YOU!

Spending the night in a new place can be a scary experience for children. Fortunately, The Shelter’s magical stuffed animal friend Benny the Bear is the embodiment of warmth and comfort. He spends many nights snuggling with children who need a little extra reassurance. His plush embrace chases away the shadows of fear and uncertainty. Benny's gentle presence is a source of peace for many, offering a silent promise of safety as everyone drifts off to sleep. Please don’t sleep on your chance to give to the Richland County Domestic Violence Shelter through this year’s #RichlandGives campaign. Your donation will be used right here in our community to offer comfort and safety to our most vulnerable neighbors. Please donate to The Shelter by visiting our Richland Gives site before 7 p.m. on Dec. 3rd to make the most of your charitable donation. Click here: https://bit.ly/4eJSaDT
