About us
ENCASE brings together CO2 Carbon Storage (CCS) research infrastructures, operators, manufacturers, academia, and SMEs to increase competitiveness in the CCS industry. By improving 7 world-leading CCS-research infrastructures with state-of-the-art scientific instruments, tools and methods to be the backbone for research and development of CCS technologies, ENCASE will contribute to a safer, more cost-effective, and environmentally friendly CO2 transport and injection. The ENCASE project has received funding from the European research infrastructures (including e-Infrastructures) under the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 101094664.

The permanent storage of CO2 takes place in underground geological structures that have suitable confinement characteristics like depleted oil& gas fields and saline formations. The injected CO2 accumulates in the fractures and interstices of porous and permeable rocks in deep geological formations deemed suitable. By storing CO2 underground, we are using a natural process that has trapped CO2, oil, and gas for millions of years. Both oil and gas fields and deep saline aquifers have the same key geological features required for CO2 storage: a layer of porous rock to absorb the liquid CO2 and an impermeable layer of cap rock which seals the porous layer underneath, trapping the CO2. 🔵 Do you want to know more? Inspiring future scientists through The ENCASE project 🌍✨ As part of the ENCASE project, Institute for Energy Technology recently conducted a series of workshops at Li Skole in Norway, combining science, sustainability, and hands-on discovery. Students explored the universe at their fingertips by searching for micrometeorites, examining them under microscopes, and learning about Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). These workshops are more than just a classroom activity—they’re about inspiring the next generation to connect STEM education with real-world challenges, like protecting our atmosphere and advancing green solutions. With 42 micrometeorites discovered and plenty of curiosity sparked, the project was a huge success. The Role of CO2 Densification in Enhancing Transportation Efficiency Densification techniques play a crucial role in maximizing the capacity and efficiency of CO2 transportation infrastructure. Two primary methods are employed: • Cooling: Chilling CO2 to a liquid state significantly reduces its volume, enabling transportation of larger quantities within existing pipelines or ships. However, energy consumption for CO2 pre-cooling needs careful consideration. • Compression: Increasing CO2 pressure allows for transporting larger CO2 volumes within a given pipeline capacity. However, this necessitates additional compression infrastructure at the source and decompression facilities at the injection site, impacting overall energy consumption. Do you want to know more? Optimizing CO2 Capture for Efficient Transportation and Injection The selection of a suitable CO2 capture technology significantly impacts the efficiency of subsequent transportation and injection processes. Common capture technologies include amine scrubbing, post-combustion capture, oxy-fuel combustion, and pre-combustion capture. Each method possesses distinct advantages and considerations regarding CO2 purity, energy consumption, and compatibility with various emission sources. High-purity CO2 streams are favourable for pipeline transportation due to reduced risk of corrosion and compatibility with existing pipeline infrastructure. Conversely, lower purity CO2 streams may necessitate additional processing or alternative transport methods like ship transport, which exhibits greater tolerance for CO2 stream variations. #Empowering the Next Generation of #Sustainability Leaders The Co-creation day marked the first step of the Contest “Racconti di Transizione Energetica: La SFIDA della Sostenibilità” and was held at the Piacenza Campus Arata of Politecnico di Milano last week. This initiative, part of our project, was organized by LEAP s.c.a r.l. - Tecnopolo Piacenza together with #PolitecnicodiMilano, Clust-ER Greentech Energia e Sviluppo Sostenibile, The Open University, and COMUNE DI PIACENZA (many thanks to Francesco Brianzi) and aims to #inspire young minds and #empower them to lead the charge toward a #sustainable #future. With almost 60 students from Liceo Scientifico Lorenzo Respighi in #Piacenza and their dedicated teachers in attendance, the session fostered #collaboration and #creativity. Participants have started to face critical topics related to energy transition and they began shaping their ideas into their future projects to be presented within the initiative.
