As "Merger Monday" came & went, the big talked about merger never happened -- Kroger and Albertson's broke off their deal when it became apparent that regulators were not going to let it move forward. Even without that, Kroger remains the big player among traditional grocery stores. Here's a look at the top food retailers (by revenue) from our Global 5000 database.

Match & Append - a rule of thumb. Our Global 5000 is often used by marketing teams who take our file and match it to their internal CRM records and append an indicator (record number of ranking) for matched records onto their internal customer & prospect file. The idea is that the external validation indicating a record is part of a large organization lets the sales & marketing team handle the big player appropriately. The concept is simple. The practice & implementation is often tedious and manual. We have found that the records in the file typically fall into 3 buckets and are usually equally split. There are records that match 100% first time thru. Another 1/3 of the records will have no match and the final third are "maybe's" that need manual research -- maybe for spelling or abbreviations or missing words, etc. If you are interested in matching your internal marketing records to The Global 5000 -- get in touch. https://lnkd.in/eym4Qj-h

Fortune Lists & Forbes Private Companies & The Global 5000 Each year, both Fortune and Forbes publish company lists with updated information for the latest fiscal years. Traditionally, Fortune produced the Fortune 500 which is a list of the largest US public industrials. That has expanded over time to be the Fortune 1000 and in recent years, the Global 500, a European version, Southeast Asia edition, and so on. The basic premise is that these are publicly listed companies and the respective listings are based on revenue from the previous year. For years, Forbes published their list of the largest US private companies. More recently Forbes has been publishing the Forbes 2000, a list of public companies based on a Forbes model that includes revenues and market value. The Global 5000 includes companies from all these lists and more – it includes both public and private companies worldwide and is based on revenue. We regularly use those published Fortune and Forbes lists to match and compare against The Global 5000 to make sure we are not over-looking any obvious companies in our research. Are You Really Going to Sell to Russia and China? Know Your Available Market! When we look at the totality of markets and revenues and industries across the Global 5000 companies, it is striking: 5000 companies. $76 trillion in revenue and over 171 million employees. However, most companies do not really have a chance to reach all those numbers. Their available market is less than those totals. This simple concept is often lost at planning time when market projections are rolled out. You should really be looking at your Total Available Market (TAM) vs total market figures. Here’s a quick example from our Global 5000 database. Assume you have a product focused on the Financial Services industry and you are selling to the major players in that space. From the Global 5000, you have 835 candidates for your product/services and they have a total revenue base of $15 trillion. Impressive. However, 107 of those and 21% of the revenue are located in China and Russia. Are you really going to be able to reach those firms? Unlikely. Each situation will be different of course and using some basic segmenting of the Global 5000 database, you can easily get closer to a reasonable target.
