The Global Opportunity Youth Network (GOYN), a multi-stakeholder initiative hosted at The Aspen Institute and managed in partnership with GDI, has wrapped up an incredible week hosting its 5th Annual Global Convening in #Pune! Our GDI team facilitated engaging sessions alongside 300+ youth leaders and partners from over 15 communities across Africa, India, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Beyond the invaluable knowledge exchange, we witnessed the power of authentic connections through: 🇮🇳 Cultural immersion in Indian hospitality 📣 Youth-led discussions sharing lived experiences 🤝 Community marketplace showcasing local entrepreneurship This year’s Convening centered around the theme Transforming Youth Livelihoods: Pathways to Full Potential. GOYN’s mission is to create sustainable economic opportunities for youth and guide them on their journey toward personal success, well-being, and financial sustainability. GOYN aims to address systemic barriers like inequality and discrimination, fostering equitable outcomes for Opportunity Youth. GOYN’s Annual Convening is an important opportunity to forge stronger connections across the network, deepen learning, and showcase how GOYN is shifting mindsets, policies, and practices to build inclusive ecosystems that drive real change for young people.

#WasteManagement was officially on the agenda at #COP29 in #Baku for the first time as a way to mitigate climate change. This is a pivotal moment for the waste and circular economy sector- kudos to ISWA International Solid Waste Association for setting up COP’s first-ever waste pavilion. India’s waste story is challenging yet unique and intersects with some of the greatest climate and social challenges facing us today. India has some of the most progressive waste policies, ambitious NDCs, and a relatively low plastic footprint. However, an increasingly urbanized population and growing economy have led to an exponential increase in its waste and worsened its climate impact. Only 6.3% of philanthropic climate funding from 2018-23 went to waste management, and a mere 1.4% of climate equity funding in 2023 went to waste & circularity (India Climate Collaborative, Climake, & Unitus Capital). In a limited pool of capital, hardly any is trickling down to the hands-on implementers of waste management in India. Consisting of ~14 million waste workers and thousands of yet uncounted MSMEs, this sector manages anywhere from 20-60% of solid waste, achieving 25-50% higher recycling rates and producing 3.6 times lower emissions than formal waste management enterprises (International Labour Organization and Chintan (Environmental Research and Action Group)). As part of our overall climate thesis, and with the support of IKEA Foundation and Laudes Foundation, GDI South Asia is incubating a new initiative to help unlock more financing for the waste sector and ensure it moves down the pyramid. As we delve into this problem, we’re building a group of progressive early adopters keen to explore how capital, technology, knowledge, and market access can be made democratically available to informal entrepreneurs. GDI-incubated Dignity Restoration Project (DRP) is seeking qualified individuals to serve on their board! DRP is a pioneering initiative operating at the nexus of racial justice and economic equity. It seeks to rectify the injustices inflicted upon Detroit homeowners—predominantly African-American families—during the city’s property tax foreclosure crisis from 2009 to 2015. Over this period, unlawful over taxation stripped more than 30,000 families of their homes and deepened America’s already staggering racial wealth gap. DRP is dedicated not only to securing financial restitution for the victims, but also to restoring dignity to those affected through comprehensive social and economic solutions. This initiative also aims to develop a scalable model for reparations with national significance. DRP is seeking individuals to fill the following roles: General Board Member, Marketing & Public Relations Board Member, Racial Repair & Justice Board Member, Faith-Based Board Member, and Foundation Affiliated Board Member.
