We were honored to host Convo 101, a workshop on navigating difficult conversations, with the Jewish Federation of Greater Nashville and #Leadership615—and we left with a renewed sense that we’ve got this! During our time together, we practiced the art of LISTENING—really listening. Not listening to respond. Not listening to win. But listening to truly understand, with empathy and care. We explored how listening is the foundation of any respectful conversation. But to take it further, we must also: 🔹 REFLECT BACK – “Did I hear you correctly?” or “This is how I understand what you said—is that right?” 🔹 ENCOURAGE & EMPOWER – “Can you tell me more about that?” or “When did you first start to feel that way?” These two steps signal to the other person that we genuinely care about their context and their WHY. One powerful realization from the workshop was how often, when faced with differing opinions, we start an internal dialogue—trying to guess someone’s reasoning before they’ve even had the chance to explain. But when we truly listen, reflect back, and encourage deeper conversation, the need to assume disappears. If done well, they will share their "why" in their own words, and we’ll understand first-hand. So, next time you enter a conversation, remember these three steps: 1️⃣ Listen 2️⃣ Reflect Back 3️⃣ Encourage And most importantly—recognize that a conversation is not a debate. It’s an opportunity for respectful, humble dialogue where both people can share openly and authentically. Let’s #KeepTheConversation going.
