Despite Sweeping Updates To Facebook Policies In Favor Of ‘Free Expression,’ Restrictions On Marijuana-Related Accounts Remain Despite new changes to content moderation announced earlier this week, Meta—the owner of Facebook, Instagram and Threads—appears not to be changing its practices around marijuana, continuing to block search results on the social media platform for terms such as “marijuana” and “cannabis” and instead displaying a notice encouraging users to report “the sale of drugs.” Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced a number of changes to content policies and moderation on Tuesday, such as stepping away from practices like third-party fact checking in favor of a community notes model, in which users are responsible for flagging questionable content. The company said it’s also “getting rid of a number of restrictions on topics like immigration, gender identity and gender that are the subject of frequent political discourse and debate.” https://lnkd.in/gPimbWsK

Study: No Changes In Driving Performance Following Use Of CBD Subjects exhibit no significant changes in their driving performance following the use of CBD, according to clinical trial data published in the journal Addiction. A team of Spanish investigators assessed participants’ simulated driving performance after inhaling CBD or a placebo. Subjects displayed “no statistically significant changes in overall driving performance score” after vaporizing products containing either 15 percent or 30 percent CBD. Further, researchers identified “no statistically significant differences in secondary outcomes, such as the standard deviation of lateral lane position, distance travelled outside the lane, reaction time, or collisions.” Subjects’ visual functions were also largely unaffected following CBD administration. https://lnkd.in/gbmYGWbc

About one in three chronic pain patients reported using cannabis as a treatment option, according to a 2023 AMA-published report. Most of that group said they used cannabis as a substitute for other pain medications, including opioids. Other research published that year found that letting people buy CBD legally significantly reduced opioid prescription rates, leading to 6.6 percent to 8.1 percent fewer opioid prescriptions. A 2022 research paper that analyzed Medicaid data on prescription drugs, meanwhile, found that legalizing marijuana for adult use was associated with “significant reductions” in the use of prescription drugs for the treatment of multiple conditions. https://lnkd.in/g2uauecf

Traditional Pharmaceuticals: Precision Tools Think of medical marijuana as an orchestra rather than a solo performer. Its many natural compounds work together in what scientists call the “entourage effect.” THC and CBD, the two most well-known components, are like the conductor and first violin, but dozens of other compounds play supporting roles. They interact with your body’s own endocannabinoid system – a complex network that helps regulate everything from pain and mood to appetite and sleep. If medical marijuana is an orchestra, traditional pharmaceuticals are more like laser beams – precisely targeted to address specific issues. When you take an ibuprofen for a headache or an antibiotic for an infection, you’re using medications designed to target particular problems in specific ways. This precision comes from decades of laboratory development and testing, resulting in consistent, predictable effects. However, side effects are prominent especially when multiple medications are mixed. https://lnkd.in/gb4HciAJ

A new video from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) touts the many uses of hemp, including for fabric, paper, construction materials and a wide range of nutritional products. Novel ways of processing the plant, it adds, could one day incorporate nutrients from hemp into even more everyday foods. Scientists with USDA’s Agricultural Research Service are working to “unlock this plant’s amazing nutritional benefits for consumers and new economic benefits for the farmer,” the agency said in a news release this week. The research is unfolding at the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, in Peoria, Illinois. “There’s a couple ways of utilizing hemp seeds,” he says. “One is that you use the whole grains, the whole seeds… The other way to do it is to take out some of the components to incorporate the formulation of a lot of common foods.” “I think that the industry really does not have that kind of knowledge. It takes time, money to try some of those things that they may not be willing to spend,” the research director continues. “What we will try to do is develop a technology that enables the industry to use those materials.” As part of that work, Liu says, “we want to figure out what is going to happen if you put those ingredients in the food formulation—for instance bakery goods, Cheetos, whatever it is—that will cause the color changes, texture changes or flavor changes. If that’s the issue, how are we going to solve it?” https://lnkd.in/gVB5jZJf
