A Houston family’s story of grief after the loss of their father in 2021 paints a picture of the mental health and academic struggles the estimated 5,000 pandemic-bereaved children in the Houston area continue to face. According to Julie Kaplow, executive director of our Trauma and Grief Center at The Hackett Center for Mental Health, professionals trained in trauma-informed care — including those placed at schools — can help children process their grief in a healthy way.
