🚢 Exciting news: The ICCT has just launched FUMES 2 (Fugitive and Unburned Methane Emissions from Ships Part 2) to further quantify methane emissions from LNG-powered ships! 📣 This 2-year research initiative builds on the first FUMES study, which measured methane emissions from ships fueled by liquefied natural gas (#LNG) under real-world conditions. FUMES 2 will address knowledge gaps regarding methane emissions from LNG engines, LNG carrier ships, and LNG cargo handling. With LNG use as a marine fuel growing, the project comes at a crucial time and will help inform future regulatory measures by the International Maritime Organization and #EU. FUMES 2 brings together an international consortium including the ICCT, Explicit ApS, the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), Queen Mary University of London, and the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. "With the rapid growth of LNG shipping, understanding the full scope of methane emissions is increasingly important for climate policy," said Dr. Bryan Comer, Marine Program Director at the ICCT. Our latest #MarketMonitor for the #European heavy-duty vehicle (#HDV) market is out!⚡ Amid a contraction in the broader market in Q3, the sales share of #ZeroEmission HDVs remained stable. Key highlights: ▪️ Just under 2,900 zero-emission HDV were sold in the third quarter of 2024: 700 heavy trucks, 1,000 light and medium trucks, and 1,200 buses. ▪️ Total HDV sales fell from 110,000 in Q2 to 74,000 in Q3—however, the share of zero-emission HDVs remained mostly unchanged (4.0% in Q3 versus 4.1% in Q2). ▪️ For the first time, more than 10% of all light and medium trucks sold in the EU were zero-emission. Between Q2 and Q3, their sales shares rose from 9.9% to 10.4%. For heavy trucks, the share of zero-emission vehicle sales increased from 1.1% in Q2 to 1.2% in Q3. ▪️ The sales share of zero-emission buses dropped from 18% in Q2 to 14% in Q3. 🆕 New data: If Q1 and Q2 trends continue through the end of the year, 2024 will surpass 2023 in both total registrations and market share for zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles. Here are some other highlights from our U.S. zero-emission bus and truck market spotlight for January to June of 2024: 🥇In the first quarter of 2024, nearly 11% of all new buses registered in the United States were zero-emission vehicles — the first time zero-emission technology has surpassed 10% market penetration in any HDV segment. 🔋More than 99% of zero-emission HDVs registered in Q1 and Q2 2024 were battery electric. 🚛 Daimler, Paccar, and Volvo Truck collectively represented about three quarters of zero-emission heavy truck registrations in the first half of 2024. 🚗 Our new edition of the European Vehicle Market Statistics is out! #VehicleMarket #EVs Here are the five top trends shaping the evolution of Europe’s automotive industry: 1. 📈 The EU vehicle market grew 14% in 2023 compared with 2022, reaching 10.6 million new cars. This marks the first increase in new car registrations across all Member States in the European Union since 2019. 2. #SUVs led the charge, making up 48% of new registrations in 2023. The lower medium segment followed with 19%. 3. 💨 #CO2 emissions decreased slightly. Average emissions from new passenger cars registered in the EU-27 dropped in 2023 to 108 g/km, 2 g/km lower than in 2022. 4.⚡Battery electric vehicles (#BEVs) accounted for nearly 15% of all new car sales (+3 percentage points from 2022). The BEVs also powered ahead in the bus segment, capturing 40% of bus sales. 5.
