About us
The first scientific conference committed to probiotics (since 2000) - world leading event where the movers and shakers of probiotic science meet. At #IPC2024 - scientists from academia and industry present current advances in the research, production and use of probiotics, prebiotics, microbiome modulators, pharmabiotics, live biotherapeutic products, postbiotics, psychobiotics and provide insights in their role in maintaining #health and preventing #diseases. The 17th International Scientific Conference on #Probiotics, #Prebiotics, Gut #Microbiota and #Health – IPC2024 will be held during the 18th - 20th June 2024 Prague, Czechia. The goal of conference is to provide a scientific forum for all stakeholders of probiotics and prebiotics and to enable the interactive exchange of state-of-the-art knowledge. The conference is focused on evidence-based benefits, health claims proven in scientific experiments and clinical trials. New scientific evidences that support or question the efficiency of already existing or prospective substances and applications will be conferred. In addition novel strains, controversial but scientifically solid ideas, approaches and visions will be presented as well. Further to its scientific content, IPC2024 is a networking event. It is a unique opportunity to meet all the stakeholders of probiotics and prebiotics. Participants will met those who influenced the past, influence the present and most importantly will shape the future of probiotics and prebiotics by means of basic research, clinical trials, regulatory efforts or development of industrial technology. Initiation of cross-boarder co-operations between scientists and institutions will be also facilitated. #ipc2024

Super excited to finally share our paper: “Gut physiology and environment explain variations in human gut microbiome composition and metabolism” is now published in Nature Microbiology! 🚀 https://lnkd.in/dq5ddY3A By combining microbiome profiling, untargeted metabolomics and ingestible capsules, we found that: 📌 Gut environment stability varied for each individual (over period of 9 days) 📌 Segmental intestinal transit time and pH in the gut largely varied between healthy individuals (e.g. small intestinal transit time 2.5–10.3 h) 📌 These measures strongly associated with gut microbiome composition as well as with urine metabolome and explained more variation than e.g. dietary macronutrients 📌 Breath methane and several uremic toxins (including p-cresol sulphate) and dicarboxylic acids positively correlated with colonic transit time while the opposite was shown for short-chain fatty acids 📌 Many coffee-derived metabolites were associated to the gut physiological factors ☕ 📌 Dietary fibre intake was inversely linked to uremic toxins' levels🫘 🥦 This work would not have been possible without the incredible support of my amazing mentors and co-authors Henrik Munch Roager, Lars Ove Dragsted, Malte Studnitz Jørgensen, Martin Laursen, Tine Rask Licht, Giorgia La Barbera, Morten Arendt Rasmussen, Eirini Tsekitsidi, RD, MSc and Jeroen Raes 🙏 And big thanks to all the dedicated study participants who made this research possible 💙 I am excited to hear how these findings resonate with the field🧪✨ Check the behind the paper story here --> https://lnkd.in/dWqUBWjm And of course we celebrated with style 🥂 💩 #gutmicrobiome #metabolomics #gutphysiology

What Do We Know About The Interactions Between Our Microbiomes And Our Nutrition? #Mysummary Research shows that diet plays a crucial role in shaping the gut microbiome, with certain foods influencing the composition, diversity, and function of the microbiota. The gut microbiome, in turn, interacts with the gut epithelium and mucosal immune system, maintaining intestinal homeostasis and impacting overall health. For instance, dietary alterations can induce large, temporary microbial shifts within 24 hours, and the consumption of specific types of food can produce predictable shifts in existing gut bacterial genera. The microbiome and its metabolites influence human health and disease, and alterations in the gut microbiome have been implicated in various conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and gastrointestinal diseases. #Mythoughts I prepared this as I was looking into one nutritional approach that considers the role of the gut microbiota, i.e. the low Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides and Polyols (FODMAP) diet. So many individuals ask about it! FODMAPs refer to a group of short-chain carbohydrates that some individuals mal absorb. They pull fluid into the intestinal lumen through an osmotic effect and are rapidly fermented by gut bacteria, which can lead to symptoms like bloating, gas, abdominal pain, and altered bowel habits in susceptible individuals. Studies have shown that a low FODMAP diet reduces these gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome and other functional gut disorders. Gut Microbiome Stability: The Role of Persistent vs. Transient Colonizing Bacteria #Mysummary This paper investigates how transient colonizing species (TCS) impact gut dysbiosis and functional impairment compared to persistent colonizing species (PCS) in the human gut microbiome. By studying a Swedish longitudinal cohort (n=86) over a one-year period and validating these findings in other geographical regions, the researchers discovered two key microbial populations: 🔹PCS are stable residents that support microbiome richness and stability, while TCS are transient and linked with destabilizing effects, akin to the "Anna Karenina Principle" effect. 🔹TCS were found to increase in various diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type-2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer. Interestingly, they were linked with harmful compounds like indoleacetic acid. 🔹The relationship between PCS and TCS is not just local to Sweden—it’s globally conserved! This was validated in cohorts from the USA and Italy. Bacteria Observed: 🔹PCS Examples: Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Roseburia hominis, and Eubacterium eligens. 🔹TCS Examples: Klebsiella pneumoniae, Veillonella parvula, and Streptococcus mitis. Fusobacterium nucleatum #Mythoughts The "Anna Karenina Principle" (AKP) refers to a concept derived from the opening line of Leo Tolstoy's novel Anna Karenina: “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” The Anna Karenina Principle in this paper implies that a healthy gut microbiome (rich in PCS) is relatively uniform and stable, meaning all the necessary factors for microbial balance are present. In contrast, a dysbiotic (unhealthy) gut microbiome, often dominated by TCS, can deviate in different ways due to disruptions in different factors, making each instance of dysbiosis unique. HAPPY to hear your THOUGHTS and stay POSITIVE! #Myinspiration “If you lose, don't lose the lesson.” Dalai Lama Link to the paper here: https://lnkd.in/edc73-8T #microbiome #science #biology #health #pharma #diet #nutrition #probiotics #therapeutics #startup #biotech Saeed Shoaie
