Invest in Students’ Futures Our friends in Liberia are Excited for back to school! The next generation is our future. Set young students up for success by supplying their education. A school supplies donation invests in the future by improving the resources available to students. Not every family has the financial stability to supply their child with the proper school equipment to succeed. Donations ensure that everyone in the classroom is equipped with the fundamental tools to thrive in school. Join us in providing quality supplies and supporting education in Liberia. We collect and distribute teaching and school supplies to schools in Africa. Children in Africa are in dire need of school supplies. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to the resources they need to succeed academically. Donating school supplies plays a crucial role in bridging this gap and setting the stage for brighter futures. Having the proper tools contributes significantly to a student’s ability to engage in the learning process. We are working to keep children in school. We are building futures, day by day. The Liberian Association of the North Shore in collaboration with Kumba Foundation. History Liberia, which means “land of the free,” was the first nation on the African continent to gain its independence on July 26, 1847 from the United States of America, which is why Liberian Independence Day is celebrated on July 26. With a constitution modeled after the U.S. Constitution in 1848 Joseph Jenkins Roberts was elected Liberia’s first president. Liberia’s Independence Day is a day to honor and highlight the current and historical relationship between the United States and Liberia, and the vital contributions Liberians make to the United States. •Did you know? • Monrovia, Liberia’s capital; is named in honor of U.S. President James Monroe. •On January 22, 2024, Joseph Boakai was sworn in as the twenty-sixth and current president of Liberia. •The Liberian flag is based on the flag of the United States and was adopted on July 26th 1847. It has 11 horizontal red stripes representing the 11 men who signed the Liberian Declaration of Independence. The single star represents African freedom. Congratulations to Liberian Ms. Kadiatu H. Kaya A proud biology, Chemistry & health science graduate! from St. Catherine University. “As a first-generation international student, Kadiatu Kaya ’24 attributes her success at St. Catherine University to generous scholarships, extraordinary mentorship from professors, and the powerful science community in Mendel. In the Liberian school system, Kaya received very little lab experience. The moment she began taking classes in Mendel, that changed — and so did Kaya herself. As she created chemical reactions firsthand and practiced handling and experimenting with substances that were once purely theoretical, Kaya unlocked a passion for chemistry that both surprised and empowered her. Armed with this passion, Kaya set to work. Like many students, Kaya required extensive access to lab resources in order to get accustomed to equipment and safety procedures, as well as to complete her classroom assignments and research projects. From (Manchester University) in Indiana Class of 2024. “From the moment I embarked on my journey as an immigrant from Liberia to the United States in 2007, the prospect of a new life filled with disappointments and opportunities beckoned me. As I navigated the unfamiliar landscape of Indiana, USA, everything became a reality. Today, at my PharmD commencement- my heart swelled with joy and gratitude as I walked across that stage. I stood, knowing that my dreams and aspirations, once distant and seemingly unattainable, are now fulfilled. Every setback, every challenge, and every doubt only strengthened my resolve to push beyond limits. I believe that the impossible is only a construct waiting to be shattered. I aim to return to the motherland, the land that shaped my identity, and contribute my quota. I want to be part of a transformative change where quality healthcare reaches every fabric of our society. I yearn to create a future where no child’s dreams are limited by their circumstances, where every life is valued, and where hope thrives. Reflecting on my journey as a pharmacist-scientist, I am overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude. Congratulations to Liberian Mr. D Matthew Fully JD (Juris doctorate degree from Albany Law School) in Albany, New York. Class of 2024 “Given that I was born and raised in a civil war, I graduated from kindergarten aged ten in a little town in Liberia, West Africa. Nonetheless, today, 17 May 2024, I’m graduating with a juris doctorate degree from the oldest independent law school in the United States — a school that was also attended by a U.S. president and at least two U.S. Supreme Court justices. Today, several years from the day I graduated kindergarten, the year I attended a United Nations (UN) refugee school, and the times I wore worn-out shoes because my mother couldn’t afford to buy me a new pair of shoes at times, I can say that I now have more than three college degrees from world renowned universities—Iowa State University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Leeds (UK), and Albany Law School. It was all by the grace and mercy of God, because it is by His grace that I am what I am. Glory to Him, and a MASSIVE thank you to everyone who supported me on this journey.
