Quentin Meslier reminds us there's more than one path to a LEADERs fellowship. He was the one to find the startup where he wanted to work, LifeCanvas Technologies Inc., and with help from his advisor Sandra Shefelbine, he pursued a supplemental National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. Then he turned to the LEADERs program to make it all happen. Read the full story to learn how Meslier is using 3D-imaging to investigate the forces that trigger how bones strengthen and weaken and change shape over time--first at a startup out of Kwanghun Chung’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology and now as a postdoc in the lab of Associate Professor Erica Scheller at the Washington University in St. Louis. https://lnkd.in/edRBZYCM Northeastern University College of Engineering. Leadership Education for PhD Students and Post-Docs through Partnerships in Research
About us
The LEADERs Program at Northeastern University is a new experiential learning initiative that integrates leadership and professional-skills education with a research project at an organization in industry or the public sector. The program—Leadership Education Advancing Discovery through Embedded Research (LEADERs)—enriches students’ own research as they address the real-world needs of enterprises in fields from STEM to the social sciences and humanities.

Professor or Pharmaceutical Sciences Stephen Hatfield worked with Ryan Murray, PhD and biotech company Beam Therapeutics to advance a new wave of gene-edited CAR-T cell therapy to fight solid tumors. We sat down with Hatfield to discusses Northeastern's Industry PhD program, which allows working professionals to earn their PhD without leaving their full-time job. https://lnkd.in/dgzug2vf Northeastern University. The LEADERs Program at Northeastern University reposted this
What an incredible visit to Amgen last week! The LEADERs Program at Northeastern University team, along with twenty students, had a chance to visit Amgen at its Cambridge, MA, location and learn more about the work they do. It was an energizing morning filled with the enthusiasm surrounding Amgen's mission and partnership with the LEADERs Program. Our students left with a renewed sense of excitement about the options in industry and the incredible work being done at Amgen. Plus, it's always fun to slip into a lab coat and safety glasses! Thanks to my colleagues Terry Marroquin and Anne Grieves, and our Amgen partners, Tiffany Thiel and MaryBeth Rockett for organizing such a special day for our students. #phdeducation #northeasternuniversity #phdexperience #doctoralstudents #doctoralstudents #biotechnology

Ryan Murray, PhD’24, cut his own path to developing an emerging gene-edited cell therapy that could one day personalize treatment for disease. After completing his Industry PhD in Stephen Hatfield's lab, he co-founded KiraGen Bio. “I never thought I’d be an entrepreneur. I wanted to be in early science discovery, but through the LEADERs program I learned there’s other things you can do with your PhD that are still very scientifically focused in early-stage research,” says Murray, who worked at Northeastern University Center for Research Innovation (CRI). “You don’t have to be the one sitting there pipetting.” https://lnkd.in/eZRFFSEK Northeastern University. Congratulations Maria Khalid on all your success as a Sanofi fellow within the LEADERs program! Northeastern University PhD Network #phdeducation #biotech
I am grateful for the opportunity to gain experience at Sanofi, which has deepened my understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and equipped me with valuable skills for my career. I was fortunate to work with an exceptional group of experts, and I’m especially thankful to my supervisor at Sanofi, Seth Garren, for his guidance and support. A special thank you to The LEADERs Program at Northeastern University for making this opportunity possible, as well as to my amazing mentors, Erin Cram and my colleagues, for their unwavering support and encouragement.

Last week, Northeastern University welcomed its largest PhD class in history... Nearly 400 new doctoral candidates flooded into the #ISEC building on campus for their orientation, run by the Northeastern University PhD Network. The day's highlights included a current-student panel moderated by Dr. Jason Sidman, director of partnership relations, with Bliss Cui, Sepideh Fouladzadeh, and Nithesh Javvaji, who offered the new class words of wisdom on everything from time management to joining the LEADERs program, becoming a subject matter expert, and even navigating the City of Boston. What piece of advice would you give to these new PhD students?

So much goes into finding the best match for our LEADERs' students and partner organizations. That makes it even more exciting when a placement happens. We're thrilled for you, Chao Xu... Congratulations!
I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as an Intern at Amgen! I will be working on developing the data processing pipeline for analytical chemistry. A big thank you to Dylan Riggs and Ramakrishnan Natesan for making the onboarding process so seamless, and to Terry Marroquin for the support with my enrollment in the The LEADERs Program at Northeastern University.

Roee Shraga moved across the world to work in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences' lab of Distinguished Professor Renée J. Miller, using machine learning tools to comb through and easily view data sources. Of the many decisions he made as a postdoc, one profoundly impacted his quality of life: Taking the Northeastern University PhD Network's LEADERs “Leading Self and Others” course. Shraga is now the mentor... as assistant professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Read his full story on finding a community in LEADERs... We thank you and appreciate all that you do for LEADERs, Liz Myers, MS, PCC.
It was bittersweet last week closing out my fourth year teaching LEADERs in cherished partnership with Colonel Mike Manning. This course is designed to cover a broad range of leadership and project management concepts, from trust, courage, and 'wicked' problems, to Gantt charts and critical path method. Students hone their public speaking and business writing skills as they explain to the layperson how their complex research matters to society. Best of all, they deepen their confidence in themselves and get clear on the strengths they bring. I'm proud to be a part of the The LEADERs Program at Northeastern University. Thank you Sara Wadia-Fascetti and Simon Pitts for the opportunity! Thank you Conor Doyle for keeping us organized.

Amgen Principal Scientist Dylan Riggs hired LEADERs fellow Nicole Langlois, PhD'23, to make sure potential new cancer and rare disease drug proteins were safe. He was so impressed that he helped find her a full-time job as senior scientist at Amgen. His third Amgen fellow starts this fall. We sat down with Riggs to learn about his formative experience working with Langlois and what he calls “really good synergy” between Amgen and LEADERs.
