RNA has become more widely known recently due to COVID-19, but researchers have only barely scratched the surface of understanding what RNA is capable of. Our recent report presents an ambitious road map for better understanding RNA, inspired by what was achieved for DNA two decades ago by the Human Genome Project. In a recent Issues in Science and Technology podcast, Lydia Contreras — one of the report's authors — talks about what RNA is, the challenges and potential of this effort, and what lessons could be learned from previous efforts with the Human Genome Project. Smartphone technology has transformed children’s relationship with the internet in the past 15 years, and mental health among young people has declined over the same time period. Our new report concludes that social media has the potential to both harm and benefit adolescent health, and provides recommendations for how stakeholders can work to minimize social media's negative impacts on children and maximize positive effects. “Many of our children have grown up using social media, and the impact of social media use on adolescent health is something that parents, doctors, teachers, and adolescents themselves are concerned about,” said Victor J. Dzau, president of the National Academy of Medicine. “Now is the time for research to help answer this pressing question and inform ongoing public policy debates about social media.” Learn more: https://ow.ly/tQtz50Ug3We #SocialMedia #ChildHealth #ChildrensMentalHealth #Pediatrics

Several U.S.-based Nobel Prize winners were celebrated recently at a symposium co-hosted by the National Academy of Sciences and the Embassy of Sweden in USA. Although the work of the laureates spans different fields, the laureates explored some of the things their discoveries have in common — such as how they bring tangible benefits to individuals and society, and how they demonstrate the importance of collaboration in science.
