What does the more-than-human city look like? More than 15 voices—artists, researchers, urbanists, practitioners and more —explore this question in TNOC’s latest Virtual Roundtable. Together, they reclaim cities as spaces of multispecies justice, care, and interdependence. Often, urban futures are imagined with lush green facades and nature-based solutions. But how do we move beyond an anthropocentric vision where nature exists for us—and instead, recognize its own agency, rights, and histories? This is more than a thought experiment—it’s a call to action in the face of the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and rising inequalities. #TNOCESSAY Rocinha’s Bio-Cultural-Spatial Uniqueness: Where Community and Forest Converge.— May East, PhD, Edinburgh. Imagine waking up to the sound of samba drums echoing through the narrow streets of Rocinha, Brazil’s largest favela. As the sun rises, locals gather at the Parque Ecológico Rocinha—not just to enjoy the shade of the Atlantic Forest, but to protect it. With hands in the soil and paint on the walls, they plant trees, clean up waste, and create murals that tell their story: a story of resilience, culture, and deep-rooted connection to place. Poets, dancers, graffiti artists, and environmentalists are rewriting Rocinha’s story. They don’t wait for policies to change their world—they create change with their own hands. 📖 Read May East’s powerful TNOC Essay and join the conversation: https://lnkd.in/dzAJX9am #Rocinha #TNOCEssay #UrbanNature #CommunityPower #Artivism #FavelaResilience

TNOC Supports Wetland Cities! Because thriving cities need thriving wetlands Wetlands aren’t just pretty landscapes—they’re urban superheroes! 🦸♂️💧 They filter our drinking water, shield us from floods, cool our cities, and give wildlife a home. They even inspire art, culture, and education. Yet, many wetlands are disappearing fast. Cities that protect and restore them are pioneers in climate resilience and sustainability. That’s why TNOC proudly supports the Wetland City Accreditation—a global initiative recognizing cities that champion wetlands as part of urban life. 🌱 Did you know? 🌊 Coastal cities face some of the highest climate risks, but they also lead in nature-based solutions. 🏅 The Wetland City Accreditation celebrates cities that take wetlands seriously—because protecting nature means protecting ourselves. Want to see how wetlands and cities can thrive together? “The future of cities lies in their ability to adapt to society’s fast-changing pace and the risks posed by climate change. As older generations brought us peace and prosperity, it is now our turn to do the same for future ones.” – João Dinis The EU Nature Restoration Law (NRL) is a bold step toward a greener, more resilient future. By integrating nature-based solutions into urban planning, cities can combat biodiversity loss, climate risks, and social inequality while enhancing air quality, public health, and sustainable mobility. Cities have the power to lead this transformation. But do we have what it takes? Read the latest #TNOCRoundtable, featuring insights from 30+ experts, artists, and practitioners on making the NRL work. 👇 https://lnkd.in/dydR8ETx #NatureRestoration #GreenCities #EUGreenDeal #ClimateAction #UrbanNature NetworkNature EU

Fire isn’t always the enemy, sometimes it’s part of nature’s design... 🔥 During the last NetworkNature EU Annual event, we interviewed Milena Kozlowski, a forest engineer and advocate for youth voices in shaping climate and environmental policy across Europe, who is challenging how we think about fire in ecosystems... Milena explains here how every ecosystem has its own “fire regime.” Fires, depending on their intensity and frequency, are not inherently destructive—they can even play a vital role in maintaining balance in nature. Prescribed fires, for instance, have been used for millennia in agricultural practices, especially in Mediterranean regions, to reduce the risk of devastating wildfires. However, this ancient wisdom has been forgotten or criminalised in many places... Milena calls for a renewed understanding of fire as a tool to protect and preserve ecosystems. It’s time to embrace fire’s role in nature responsibly, to reduce risks and restore balance. 🔥🌱 Do you have any insights to share about the role of fire in nature? Creating Biodiverse Australian Cities: Terminology, Aesthetics, and Acceptance―Meredith Dobbie, Victoria. Biodiversity is finally entering mainstream conversations—but how do we design cities where nature thrives and people embrace it? In this #TNOCESSAY, Meredith Dobbie explores the complexities of biodiversity in Australian urban landscapes, where “rewilding” as a term is contested, and aesthetics shape public acceptance. Unlike the vibrant wildflower meadows of Europe, many Australian native plants—tussock grasses, grevilleas, and banksias—don’t fit traditional ideas of beauty. If cities need biodiversity to survive, how do we ensure these landscapes are attractive, visually appealing, protected, and appreciated by the community? Last week, The Nature of Cities team had the privilege of visiting the innovative BIG-5 Project at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. This inspiring initiative explores how people connect with nature across five of the largest social media platforms, introducing the concept of Digital Relational Values (DRVs)—positive values shaped within online communities through indirect experiences of nature. Through a deep dive into DRVs across landscapes, networks, and languages in Europe, the BIG-5 Project is unlocking insights into how digital interactions can foster a more sustainable future. We're thrilled to announce that a new chapter of collaboration has opened between BIG-5 Project and The Nature of Cities! Huge thanks to Johannes Langemeyer, Thalia Dancuart, Fulvia Calcagni for hosting us and sharing your visionary work and to the entire BIG-5 team for the thoughtful discussions and the opportunity to exchange ideas 🙌 Let’s redefine how we engage with nature—online and beyond. Commoning and Climate Justice ― Praneeta Mudaliar, Mississauga. Lilian Dart, Mississauga. Dannia Philipp, Toronto. Celina Mankarios, Mississauga. How can care fuel youth-led climate advocacy? This #TNOCEssay dives into how young activists in the Greater Toronto Area use commoning—rooted in shared values and care—to tackle intersecting crises like climate impacts, racial injustice, and inequality. Through acts of care, from emotional support to inclusive spaces, these youth leaders are building resilience and solidarity. But undervalued caregiving roles reveal deeper power imbalances. Can valuing care transform climate justice movements? 🌍 Read the full essay and join the conversation on the transformative power of care in the fight for climate justice: https://lnkd.in/d85yNRam #YouthActivism #ClimateAdvocacy #SocialJustice #ResilienceBuilding #CareEconomy #Intersectionality #CommunityAction #InclusiveLeadership #TransformativeChange #EnvironmentalJustice
