Have you read our Winter 2024 newsletter yet? This year has been full of good work connecting our neighbors to fresh, healthy food. We've met a DOUBLE-DIGIT increase in requests for food assistance with the addition of more grocery pick-up appointments, more volunteer shifts, refrigerated food lockers, and more. A free legal kiosk recently installed at The Open Door will improve digital access for local people navigating the justice system. The kiosk was provided by the Western New England University School of Law’s Legal Kiosk project. The program installs the kiosks at host sites, community spaces serving low-income people, to address digital inequity and systemic social injustice. “We’re thankful to have the opportunity to serve as a host site and help reduce barriers to access when it comes to internet, technology, and the legal system,” President and CEO Julie LaFontaine said. “And as folks stop by, we can connect them to free groceries, meals to-go and in-person, SNAP support, and other food resources to help provide stability. Having one less thing to worry about means a lot when you’re on the cusp.” Read more below! https://lnkd.in/eJRVAUWi

Today we celebrated the official naming of The AMG Nutrition and Culinary Production Kitchen! THANK YOU to AMG for your support of our mission to alleviate the impact of hunger in our community. This kitchen has already allowed us to step up from preparing 1,000 meals per week pre-pandemic to 3,000+ meals a week today. As we continue to see increased need for food resources in our community, that increased capacity has been critical. THANK YOU AMG! #neighborshelpingneighbors #northshorema #capeannma #hungerrelief AMG

Today is ADVOCACY DAY for the Food Research & Action Center National Anti-Hunger Policy Conference 2024. The Open Door joined other state advocates and met with Rep. Jim McGovern and members of U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren and Congressman Seth Moulton's teams. Hunger-relief advocates today worked to strengthen and protect federal anti-hunger policies from SNAP in the Farm Bill to child feeding programs like School Meals and Summer Meals for Kids. Currently the House Farm Bill has $30 BILLION in cuts to SNAP that would hurt the most vulnerable. Thankful for the opportunity to meet with our elected officials and advocate for hunger-relief. #HUNGERPC24
