Founder & CEO, Comfort Connect | I help HVAC and plumbing contractors increase profits and customer loyalty by providing dedicated support through our Premier Program®.

One of the things I enjoy most about building Comfort Connect is the exposure I have to our industry partners. There are several leaders in the home services industry that I have an unbelievable amount of respect for and from whom I learn a lot. Plus, I like them as humans! The part I find most intriguing is that our backgrounds couldn't be more different. Yet, because there is a high-level of mutual respect, it opens a whole new world of learning opportunities. In our increasingly digital world, take the time to invest in relationships. Go see people. Break bread. Learn about them as people, not just professionals. Help them, even when it doesn't benefit you. Show them that they can rely on you. These are the relationships that provide the most personal fulfillment, but also the ones that will prove highly valuable over time when you least expect it.

If you’re like most people, you probably dislike change. It’s uncomfortable. It's uncertain. It can be downright scary. 5 years ago, I turned down a dream job at a multi-billion dollar asset manager to pursue another dream - building a business from scratch. I had an idea, a PowerPoint presentation, and a financial model. But no team, no funding, and a lot of things to still figure out. It was like stepping into a cold plunge; staying dry just feels easier. Even when I knew it could lead to something better, it was tempting to stick with what was least disruptive. But here’s the thing— The biggest transformations don’t happen without change. Can you shed 30 pounds without significantly changing your activity level and diet? Likely not. But those changes are hard, very hard. They take time, effort, accountability, and commitment. The same is true for your business. You’ve seen it before— • Old methods that aren’t working like they used to. • Customers asking for something different. • Competition rising to new levels. • Internal resistance to making changes. The businesses that win? They don’t avoid change—they embrace it head-on. They evolve how they serve customers, how they communicate, and how they deliver value. And when they do, they thrive. The first step might feel uncomfortable. But that’s exactly where transformation begins. Ask yourself, when was the last time I really changed the way I/we do things? Was it worth it?

  • Well said! And there’s no doubt that’s the culture and expectation we have built at Comfort Connect! I believe it also gives an appreciation of what others do for the organization and a better understanding how your role fits into theirs as we grow and pass responsibility on to new team members. What are the complexities and challenges in each role? Much better environment for collaboration and team mindset than to tell them what to think. It’s been a fun ride so far growing Comfort Connect to what it is today and I’m very excited about the things we have coming up in the future!

Last year, I was asked this question in an interview— "What's your advice for young people on starting a business in today's climate?" Here's my take on it— Be willing to do every job in the business at some point. Whether you're just starting out or already leading a team, this mindset is everything. I've learned that if you're serious about changing an industry, inevitably, you'll face walls that feel impossible to break through. To succeed, you'll need a team of people who'll go over, around, under, and/or through those walls… Whatever it takes to clear any obstacles. That's the exact ethos we live by every day at Comfort Connect. Transforming how Home Comfort is purchased and sold and guiding contractors to reach new heights in their businesses with a fresh approach to residential replacement sales. If you're ready to build something meaningful, make sure you (and your team) are prepared to do whatever it takes. Because real change doesn't happen without that level of commitment.

Founder & CEO, Comfort Connect | I help HVAC and plumbing contractors increase profits and customer loyalty by providing dedicated support through our Premier Program®.

From 2013-2016, I was involved in the 2nd largest residential HVAC and plumbing company in the country. A few things struck me as odd about the industry/my experience: • We spent hundreds in advertising dollars to acquire an install customer; • On each install, we included a free year of maintenance; • However, a good portion of customers canceled their agreements after the free year; • The ones that stayed with us often canceled in years 2-4, as they became frustrated with the consistent “upsells” that took place on maintenance visits; • We had 220,000 maintenance agreements when we bought the company; • After selling the business and generating nearly a 20x return, we still had 220,000 maintenance agreements. There was almost no focus on CUSTOMER LIFETIME VALUE. But, I knew that keeping existing customers costs far less than getting new ones. Plus, as a multi-trade contractor, there were plenty of opportunities to provide additional value to customers and grow revenue, if we weren’t so damn short-term focused. Fast forward to today…. Most home services contractors dedicate more time and resources to acquiring new customers than retaining existing ones. Generally speaking, maintenance agreement renewal rates are poor. Very few home services contractors focus on maximizing CUSTOMER LIFETIME VALUE. How do we shift our focus to CUSTOMER LIFETIME VALUE? 1. Focus on the relationship, not the transaction. 2. Once you acquire a customer, make a pledge to never lose them. 3. Build trust upfront and with each subsequent interaction. 4. Leverage in-home maintenance visits to build trust and recommend additional products/services when they are truly needed. 5. Utilize innovative programs that align with maximizing CUSTOMER LIFETIME VALUE. Why is this so important? A satisfied customer today may make a referral. A satisfied customer over a decade? They become a perpetual referral engine. They don’t just call you back. They don’t just buy additional products/services from you. They tell their friends about you; about their experience with you. Every job you do is a chance to create a raving fan for life. Don’t underestimate the value of these customers. They are worth more than their weight in gold. ♻️ Repost to inspire your contractor friends to think long(er)-term!

Lately, I’ve learned something significant in building Comfort Connect — People don’t care about your product or service. They care about how it benefits them and how it solves a problem they have. You're invisible if they don’t know it exists—or can’t see why it matters (to them). Moreover, people buy from those they know, like, and trust. No matter how amazing your product is, trust and connection win business. Make sure people know - 🔹 Who you are, 🔹 What you offer, 🔹 Why they should trust you, and 🔹 How you will help them. That’s the winning ticket!
