The Richardson Chamber of Commerce is the business and information assistance center for Richardson, Texas with a paramount goal of making business better for its membership. The Chamber is three times accredited as a 5-star chamber by the US Chamber of Commerce, recognizing its high quality, expertise and strong leadership. Boasting a membership of more than 800, the chamber was first organized in 1946 to promote business and meet the economic needs of a fast growing suburb of Dallas. The Chamber, the City, the school district, higher education and other major community groups have come together and developed mutual objectives and as we move forward through the 21st century. Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of the Chamber in recent years has been the attraction of thousands of quality jobs to Richardson, centered around the 75 Telecom Corridor® and CityLine. • We're so excited to share a bit more about the friendly faces that greet guests at our office, events and meetings! For this STAFF SPOTLIGHT, we're featuring Johnette Alter. How long have you been with the chamber and what is your job? I recently celebrated my one-year anniversary. It is my pleasure to work with our dedicated chamber board as the Board and Governance Manager and staff liaison to the Public Policy Committee. Tell us about your family. I grew up with one foot in Gainesville on a ranch, and the other in DeWitt, Arkansas, on a farm. Our family has managed these lands for five generations. What is a fun fact no one else knows? I was a limo driver for a short time. What’s your favorite board game or sport? Monopoly was a contact sport in my family. No special treatment for age. Winner take all or go home. It’s been fun to see our sons become Monopoly fans too. Describe your perfect day. My perfect day starts with a strong cup of fresh coffee and real cream, enjoyed from an Adirondack chair outside our favorite cabin on the outskirts of Terlingua. A hearty breakfast burrito from a Terlingua gas station fuels us for a hike at Big Bend National Park. Next a well-deserved lunch and a beer in the cool, contrasting ecosystem of the Chisos Mountain Basin. Time permitting, a final excursion to swim in the Rio Grande (if it’s flowing that year) at the foot of the awe-inspiring Santa Elena Canyon. After washing off the day’s considerable grime back at the cabin, we venture out for dinner and several adult beverages to mull over our grand excursions - either over the best pizza this side of the Rio Grande at Long Draw Pizza or a rowdier meal with live music at the iconic Starlight Theatre. We end the day happily exhausted, falling asleep to the quiet of the desert. Thank you, Johnette, for all you do to support and grow the chamber!

This evening, the City Council adopted the Envision Richardson update to the Comprehensive Plan. A Comprehensive Plan is a long-term guide for city development, outlining goals for land use, transportation, housing, and economic growth. The City contracted with Kimley-Horn and its team on the project and posed with several of the program managers with the company and the City who worked on the near two-year long plan. To learn more how it will shape Richardson's future, visit www.EnvisionRichardson.com.

Congratulations to the latest graduates of the Richardson CARES program! This evening the City Council presented class participants with their certificates of completion for taking part in the Citizens Academy & Resource Education Series (CARES). CARES empowers community members with an insider's perspective on the inner workings of Richardson’s municipal government. Over the past weeks, participants gained valuable knowledge about our city's services, from public safety and utilities to parks and administration. CARES is open to anyone who lives or works in Richardson. Applications for the next cohort will open in June.

In the hustle and bustle of our careers, it’s easy to let certain passions fall by the wayside, whether it’s learning an instrument or picking up a brush to put paint to paper. At the Richardson Senior Center, however, retirees are discovering the time and freedom to explore new interests and expand their horizons in ways they couldn’t before. We recently visited with a few of them to share their inspiring stories on other social media channels and thought it would be nice to share here too.
