Next up on tips and tricks is, ‘T’ Transitions! ⁠👩🏻🏫 Transitions are what I feel are the "spice" to a video. Transitions can be done in just the post-production phase, or can be filmed practically when on set. They can be used for both aesthetic and story-driven purposes and really take videos to the next level 🌶️ The default transition is just a hard cut - where one clip gets immediately replaced by the next. While this is the most basic of transitions, you can really amp the effectiveness up by timing those hard cuts to the beat of the music. This adds a sleek and immersive feel to your video 🎶 Hard cuts can also be used to draw attention abruptly. You can have a fancy edit that's flowing with all kinds of engaging transitions/effects and then insert a hard cut to break up the cadence in an intentional way. This can add drama to the scene and re-grab the viewer's attention 👀 Dissolves/fades are another simple type of transition. These are often used to show the passing of time in a narrative sense, or to smoothly transition from one clip to the next in a stylistic sense 🎚️ Transitions don't have to be simple though! There are TONS of unique and creative transitions that can be applied such as whip pans, camera shakes, cross zooms, light leaks and more! They each give a different vibe to the edit and can help keep the video on-brand. For example, I'm working on a product video for a famous punk rock band so I've been incorporating a lot of grunge, film grain and glitch transitions to double down on the core of their music genre 🤘 It's important to not go crazy with transitions just for the sake of filling your timeline. Next up on tips and tricks is, ‘S’ Sound Effects! ⁠👩🏻🏫 Sound effects are added during the post-production phase of the creative process. They can range from transition, ambient, foley and special sound effects which all add to the mood and tone of your video 📢 Depending on the type of video you're editing you can use one or all of these sound effect categories. To start, a transition sound effect is a stylistic sound that helps emphasize switching from one scene to the next. I often use a "whoosh" sound alongside my transition movement to help make it more dramatic 🎚️ Sound effects can also help lead the viewer into the next scene audibly before the visuals on the screen change aka J and L cuts. For example, a scene could end with a character sitting in their car. You may then HEAR a doorbell a second or so before the scene visually changes to inside a house where the character is then seen answering the door. You'll often see this technique in sitcoms and movies to show the passing of time 🎛️ Ambient sound effects are used to help immerse the viewer in the environment. These could be sounds like birds chirping, the wind blowing, or cars honking 🚕 Foley sound effects are ones that mimic everyday actions. Examples could include footsteps, closing the cover of a book, or placing a plate down on a kitchen counter. These sound effects aren't supposed to be as distracting as transition and special sound effects. Most people don't even notice these sounds when foley is done well because they feel so natural 🎧 Lastly, special sound effects are pretty opposite from foley sound effects. These stylistic sounds are to emphasize parts of the screen like explosions and laser beams - so you'll usually notice them 💥 I LOVE using sound effects and it's one of my favorite parts of my editing workflow. This is the last step of my creative process. I like to have the timing of my video locked, so then I can take my time sprinkling in sound effects without having to move them around over and over. You can scroll to nearly any video I've posted and you'll notice I usually use a lot of sound effects!
